And I still have terrible swelling but worse on one side. Is that normal? I have looked back there with a flashlight and there seems to be no sign of infection (pus, etc.). I am just wodering how long this will continue because I am in so much pain I can't sleep. Well, I probably could but I want to ice the bad side as I am doing so right now.

He gave me painkillers called Oxycotin (sp?), but they make me feel really drowsy and I know they can be addicting so I am trying not to use them too much. But I do have antibitoics.

I don't know if this matter but all four were impacted.

I went through the pain of having three of my molars pulled plus one wisdom tooth. I had pain and swelling for like 3 days before they started healing. Just keep the area clean, and if they gave you pain medication make sure you take it. It will help with the pain. Keep putting ice on it and holding it there. That's what i did and it helps the swelling go down, but you have to keep it on there for along time. Hope you feel better!

I had to go into hospital to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed - one tooth was impacting upon a nerve - couldn't say which. The removal left areas that were very tender and I'm sorry to report, this took months to heal due to the trauma caused to surrounding tissue.
My advice would be to carefully brush your remaining teeth as best you can. You don't need to worry so much about infection - so long as you keep that area of your mouth clean. (I had a special hook-shaped syringe to fill with water and flush the areas of my mouth). Your saliva contains a natural anti bacterial - but there is no harm in using a decent mouthwash - talk to your chemist - they will have something available that is less nippy in your mouth.
As far as your pain goes - talk again to your chemist / pharmacist or approach your dentist for some pain killers - these will dull the pain not remove it entirely, but at least it's something.
Gradually your mouth will heal and you can get back to smiling as you meet your day.

I just had mine pulled last week but that didn't happen...you probably went through a lot of trauma when the dentist was pulling it out...Some of my friends' mouth were swollen for a week, others couldn't eat for days, and some, like me, had nothing at all. Don't worry, the swelling should go down, take some vicoden and use ice but if it doesn't go down by the next 2 days I would call the dentist

the swelling will go away in about a 5 days or so... the swelling is actually kinda normal considering the fact that your dentist had surgically remove it.... maybe even had to remove some of he bone surrounding it...
for the pain, take some painkillers.....the ones you usually take if you have a bad headache...but continue the antibiotics he gave you!! and continue icing it if makes you feel better!!

From what I have heard it is normal... but I don't know as mine won't be removed for another three weeks. I get to get one taken out in three weeks and then the other two I have taken out in a year or so. Yep thats right I was lucky and only have 3 so far.

i was swollen like you described for about a week! oh the pain!! all i can say is to try some ice, heat, whatever you got. take tylenol, if you can swallow, and the dr. should have given you antibiotic pills to take, if not, tell them you need them. I had horrible pain on my left side, normal, maybe they had to dig a bit in there.
hang in there, try to eat small bites of that semi solid food they give you, i.e. applesauce, pudding, yogurt, freeze pops. soup

I can't believe your Doc didn't give u a Rx for pain. I'd be on the phone tomorrow and tell him to give me something.
Did he tell you to rinse in warm salt water, ever so gently. for healing??
Well, usually the rule of thumb is Ice for swelling-- Heat for pain. Call your Doc!!!!!
