why do you have to swallow to stay alive?

No. The worst that can happen to you, if you're unable
to produce any saliva for a long period of time, is that
you'll develop a case of "dry mouth."
But 10 minutes is hardly anything to be worried about.
And, although not being able to produce any "spit" for
a several hours could be reason enough to go to a
hospital, it wouldn't be fatal.
I'm sure you'll be fine.

Have you ever been to the dentist?
And had one of those suction thingies in your mouth?
And not been able to swallow while he was working?
Chances are it was for more than 10 minutes!
Still alive after that?????

um yeah its possible. when i was in highschool i had a friend start savin her spit in her mouth on our walk home and she saved it for at least 15 mintues then when she had enough she spit it at the girl she didnt like and th egirl was like "what the fkdkfjck is this???" and my friend was like " its SPIT *****!!" and totally beat her up... ive been out of hs for 3 years and it happened freshman year and that STILL cracks me up!!!!! anyway, point IS no my friend did NOT die.

There is no particular hazard involved other than the inconvenience of needing a place to spit.
