There is no set prescription; there are many decievers:

"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." - 2 Corinthians 11:13-15.

One should not be paranoid, but often it takes experience to become keenly sensitive on how those who profess the title of "Christian" live their lives, ... the AXE has been laid ...

"And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire." - Matthew 3:10.

Do they exhibit the fruits of the Spirit in increasing measure as time goes by?

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Do they love Jesus more than the things of this world?

1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world--the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions--is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Do they repent of their sins when they become aware of them?

1 John 3:6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

Are they born again?

Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

By their walk and talk, by their life style. Some people can tell because they sense it. We are called to be holy and if you don't see it in a person, then its hard to tell if they are a christian or not, yet God said "Holiness without which, none shall see the Lord".

There is an old saying that went something like this:

"They do not talk about the light, because they don't have the light."

When you are in love, do your friends know it? I know how that is; people tell YOU that you are in love. They don't have to be told by you. They notice that there is something different about you, and sometimes you are 'glowing'.

It's much the same way with loving God. And the simple thing to remember is that the more you understand God, the more you love Him. At least, that's the way it works for me. I hope you do too.

Those that follow Christ actively repent and pray to keep the Holy Spirit indwelt within and to stay in His presence. This is how to stay close to the one and only living God. The fruits of the Holy Spirit bear evidence to this walk with Christ.

Match what they are doing against the 10 commandments. If they do their best to follow each one, then you can consider them, a good Christian, if they couldn't care less, then they are probably just sticking the label on themselves

well i always refer to the bible for stuff like that ...and the bible says ...they will know you are christians by your love.
when the roman empire was in control ...a couple of thousand years ago ...give or take ...the christians were noted for being good people ...the only reason that they could find to kill them was that they would not worship the emperor.
...in the soviet union ...before the wall came down ...people said that you could tell the christians ...because they were the only ones that worked hard and were honest.
the rule of thumb i use ...if they act like one ...they are one ...
