Christ is the English term for the Greek word Χριστός (Christós), which literally means "The Anointed One." The Hebrew word for Christ is מָשִׁיחַ (Mašíaḥ, usually transliterated Messiah).
The word is in fact a title, hence its common reciprocal use Christ Jesus, meaning The Anointed One, Jesus. Followers of Jesus became known as Christians because they believed that Jesus was the Christ, or Messiah, prophesied about in the Tanakh (which Christians term the Old Testament).
Muhammad traced his genealogy as follows (ibn means "son of" in Arabic; alternate names of people with two names are given in parentheses):
Muhammad was born into the Quraysh tribe. He was the son of Abd Allah, son of Abd al-Muttalib (Shaiba) son of Hashim (Amr) ibn Abd Manaf (al-Mughira) son of Qusai (Zaid) ibn Kilab ibn Murra son of Ka'b ibn Lu'ay son of Ghalib ibn Fahr (Quraysh) son of Malik ibn an-Nadr (Qais) the son of Kinana son of Khuzaimah son of Mudrikah (Amir) son of Ilyas son of Mudar son of Nizar son of Ma'ad ibn Adnan, whom the northern Arabs believe to be their common ancestor. Adnan in turn is said to have been a descendant of Ishmael, son of Abraham.
Ishmael (Hebrew: יִשְׁמָעֵאל, Standard Yišmaʿel Tiberian Yišmāʿêl; Arabic: إسماعيل, Ismā'īl) was Abraham's eldest son, born by his wife's handmaiden Hagar.
The genealogy of Jesus through either one or both of his earthly parents (Mary and Joseph) is given by two passages from the Gospels, Matthew 1:2–16 and Luke 3:23–38. Both of them trace Christ's line back to King David and from there on to Abraham; Luke traces the line all the way back to Adam.
Perhaps since Jesus was from the line of King David... thus the position of royalty that you indicated.

My friend you have to understand that although we worship the same God, (some Christians say that we do not!) Christianity and Islam are different religions. The basis of the Christian religion is not just that Jesus, peace on him.,was royal, but was in fact Gods Son. Those Christians that accept the doctrine of the Trinity go so far as to say he is in fact the second part of "godhead" ie, God the Father.God the SON,and God the Holy Spirit. In short,Christians WORSHIP Jesus.(In that sense those who say we worship different Gods are Correct!) When we say to each other "But the Bible says this!" and I as A Muslim counter with "Yes! But the Quran says this!' We are beating our heads against the wall! The religions are not the same! I cant believe everything the Christian believes and be a Muslim,Nor can the Christian believe everything a Muslim Believes and be a Christian. It Internet explorer-vs-Firefox! That said, there is the Question,Cant we all just get Along? I am not sure.

With many things Muslims must accept that Jesus is the Christ as the Qu'ran says he is without the understanding of the prophesies which makes Jesus the Christ. Muslims reject the prophesies of the Messiah and yet accept Jesus as the Messiah without understanding of its meaning.
The Qu'ran also teaches Chrsit is without sin.
19:19 He said: (Gabriel said)
I am only a messenger of thy Lord,
that I may bestow on thee a faultless son.
In Surah 19:19, Jesus alone is called a Sinless One in all the Qu’ran!
Islam doesnt have a need for the Messiah nor a sinless Messiah but none the less....Jesus is above the other prophets but called equal he creates life and resurrects the dead but there is no reason for this but that it is from the true word of God the Bible without the understanding of the meaning of these miracles.

"christ" does not indicate "royalty" in any religion other than Christianity. It means "annointed" to do something special that GOD has prepared in the original Hebrew.
Islam recognizes Jesus as the messiah that was promised by GOD that the Jews were waiting for. The Jews didn't accept him.
What I want to know is why Christians think that "Christ/Messiah" means "GOD". Jews don't.
Also, someone else already said it but Jesus is not less than Mohamed. All prophets are equal yet unique.

As a Muslim, I respect and love Jesus peace and blessings be upon him very very much.. and I also love and respect Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him, because he gives the world an ideal example of how one should live their day-to-day life.. I just don't believe either of them is a God... simply because God cannot be human.. if Jesus is supposedly the son of God and he was born in Palestine.. that would mean that Jesus is Middle Eastern.. so you believe your Lord and Savior is a Middle Eastern? uhhh... now your starting to think about this whole Jesus is lord thing over again... check out the first link on my profile for more info on the subject.. and also check out http://www.youtube.com/Converted2Islam
good luck on your search for the truth...

Muslims believe the bible has been changed, they believe Jesus was a prophet of God, but not the son of God. We love him very much. Ibn Abbas (a companion of prophet Muhammad) narrates: “When the signs of pregnancy appeared on her(Mary), with her was a righteous man from among her relatives who worshipped in the temple with her, he was called Joseph the carpenter. When he saw that her belly had become swollen he found it strange. Then he decided to think well of her because of what he knew of her innocence, honour, religious commitment and worship. But he could not stop thinking about this matter. So he said, speaking indirectly: “O Mary, I am going to ask you about something, so do not get alarmed.” She said, “What is it?” He said: “Has any tree or plant ever grown without a seed? Has any child ever been born without a father?” She said: “Yes, I understand what you are referring to. As for whether any tree or plant has ever grown without a seed, when Allah first created trees and plants He created them without seeds. And has any child ever been born without a father? Allah created Adam without either a father or a mother.” So he believed her and left her alone.” Thus he is not the son of God.
According to the Qur’an, Jesus has foretold that a messenger would be sent from Allah after him by saying: “And Jesus, the son of Mary, said: "O Children of Israel! I am the messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming the law (which came) before me, and giving glad tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name shall be ‘Ahmad’". But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, "this is evident sorcery!" [The Qur’an, 61:6]. The names ‘Muhammad’ and ‘Ahmad’ are synonyms from the same root, which mean ‘worthy of praise’. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “... I am Muhammad and Ahmad ...” [Bukhari, 732].
Thus he told his people about the final prophet-PBUH.

Christ means anointed messenger of God. And please note that Jesus is NOT in any way lesser than Mohammad in degree. Muslims are asked not to discriminate between prophets and to hold them in equal reverence.
Lastly while Mohammad was special in that he was the one to receive the final revelation, Jesus is special for he, according to Islamic beliefs, is meant to return and gather all God-loving people to himself.

first, i want to say that i like your approach of asking the question.
second, i am not sure if the word "christ" is mention in this verse. the verse mention the word "wajehan" which can be explained as honor .
[45] (Remember) when the angels said: "O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allâh gives you the glad tidings of a Word ("Be!" - and he was! i.e. 'Isâ (Jesus) the son of Maryam (Mary)) from Him, his name will be the Messiah 'Isâ (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), held in honor in this world and in the Hereafter, and will be one of those who are near to Allâh."
Quran 3:45
second, all prophets are equal, but God has give favors on top of others, such as he gave Moses the permission to divide the sea in half, supported Jesus with the spirit of ul-Qudus (holy spirit). and Muhammad with the last message.
[253] Those Messengers! We preferred some to others; to some of them Allâh spoke (directly); others He raised to degrees (of honor); and to 'Isâ (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), We gave clear proofs and evidences, and supported him with Rûh-ul-Qudus ......
Quran Ch2:253
[285] .....and His Messengers. They say, "We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers" .......
Quran 2:285

Aha! You are well on your way to finding the truth, my friend!
"But these things are written that you may know that Jesus is the Christ, and that by believing, you may have life in His name!"

Christ = Messiah = Annointed Prophet
Jesus is the Jewish Messiah sent as a redeemer to them. If they were to accept him and his teachings then they would be forgiven for killing so many Prophets.
If not........ then an eternal curse would be put on them.
