If I had black line art on a white background, and then pasted it onto the second layer of transparent background, how could I erase the white background without erasing the line art, or having to do it around the line art?

Okay, so what I want to do is erase the line art's white background so that the background is transparent, and I want some way so I can lock the black, but get rid of the white.

1. Pick the magic wand tool
2. In the options bar uncheck contiguous and set the tolerance to 10
3. Click in the black line art to select it
4. Edit -> Copy
5. Create a new image and make sure you select transparent background. the new image will be exact size for your line art.
6. Paste line art into new image and you have it on a transparent background.

You may need to adjust the tolerance setting on the magic wand tool to get the best edge selection.
