While I'm completely obsessed with Grey's Anatomy, and this is a very old topic on the show, are there any people out there who get very aggrivated with Cristina's contempt towards Finn for being a veterinarian? Why do some people have this negative attitude towards veterinary medicine? It is in itself a medical specialty, and veterinarians study more than one kind of anatomy. It's a medical profession dependent entirely on your skills because the patient cannot speak for themselves. While Cristina can be funny, she can also be ... frickin annoying as hell. Veterinary medicine is noble and extremely gruelling. Her attitude sucks. And for those out there who take it upon themselves to accomplish the difficult task of pointing out the obvious to the world: yes, I do realize that Grey's Anatomy is just a TV show. I'm just using it as an example.

Actually Troy, in some countries, veterinarians are licensed to practice, in the case of an emergency, on both animals and humans, while medical doctoes can only reserve their abilities for humans.

Well, I respect what they do, but am I going to see them for a medical problem? Hell no! If my pet is sick, the yes.

Well if you want to get into a pissing contest, we don't euthanize our patients, you do. "Sorry, I can't help your grandma, so I took the pillow and smothered her." Now before you go and get all upset, I am joking. Besides, if a medical doctor was to help an animal, no one would care, and it has been done. Veterinary medicine may be more of a broad field, but it is also not as deep as human medicine. you help more species, we do more for one.
Seriously though, get over it. If you live and die by what other people think of what you do you'll drive yourself insane.

I don't watch Grey's Anatomy so this issue of contempt is from left field as far as I'm concerned. I've never known doctors to say anything at all about vets (either positive or negative), except as it pertains to their pets. Vets could be accountants as far as I'm concerned...they do their job, we do ours, there isn't much crossover, or grounds for envy or contempt.

I have a lot of respect for veterinarians. It is more difficult to get into vet school than med school (there are fewer vet schools), so I assume because of the competition they are very bright people. They have to treat a variety of species, medical docs treat only one. (And difficult enough to keep track of one.)

But the state of the art of human treatment is much more complex because we've devoted a lot more time, money, and research to it. It's challenging to stay up to date on ones own specialty, never mind other medical specialties. There is no way a vet can be as well versed in human medicine as a doctor.

Vets certainly can do certain things for both, for example, suturing. No difference between suturing up a human or animal. But I would not ask a vet for personal medical advice any more than I would ask a doctor how to treat my dog.

My dog has a REAL doctor!!!

I am from the mid-west. People around here don't have many negative attitudes.

People will say, "Don't take me to that d@#$ hospital, they will kill me. Call Dr. (Vet)!"
