Also, is it legal in the day, but not at night? It's dark out, and we forgot to put the gas cap on, and left it at the top of the car. We drove off, and it fell off the car on the freeway onramp. We stopped near the end, reversed almost to the beginning, with the blinkers on. Is that legal?

We're having a big family dispute. Any webites with evidence would be helpful.

Okay, personally, I think when answering someone's question, when it's serious like this, you should try to be objective. I thought, and the majority of my siblings agree, that it was incredibly stupid. But, my mother insisted, and we tried to resist like they tell you to when you think someone's doing something dangerous, but you've got to understand- she pays for our college, school supplies, insurance, etc. We'd be out on the street (and our dad fired) if we disobeyed.

Not legal at all. Not even 1 feet is permitted, not even day or night .

Nope, no backing on any part of a freeway. Although I have seen people do it. How about the clowns who miss their exit and back up rather than just going on to the next off-ramp?

Personally, I wouldn't put my life in jeopardy for a $10 gas cap.

Only if your trying to kill someone, its driving like that, that gets people hurt. I don't want to sound like a jerk but whoever was driving should really just go up to the dmv and say the following," I now realize that I am not yet ready to drive and I would like you to take my license before I kill or cripple an innocent bystander with my horrible driving and decision making".. Check out your states dmv web site

Most srious accidents happen because someone chose to not take their driving seriously. Don't back up on a highway.

I doubt there would be too much trouble if you went slow. It is dangerous but I don't think you would get a ticket for it.
