Loyalty is pretty much the definition of "dog" ... so any breed, purebred or mutt, could be a great dog for you.

Dogs aren't born vicious, they're made that way by people who train them to be aggressive.

Some dogs DO have a tendency to be dominant, however, and should only be owned by people experienced in handling such dogs. Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepards, Cane Corsos, Presa Canarios, Giant Schnauzers, etc., are all fabulous dogs, but need early and continuous training.

Really, all dogs need training. Labrador and Golden Retrievers are great family dogs and love everybody. Standard Poodles are very intelligent dogs and very loyal and loving. The Collie is an amazing dog, if you don't mind a whole lotta dog-hair! Many of the toy breeds are also intensely loyal, but most don't get along with kids (the Pug is the exception, they LOVE kids).

A Mutt will do you just fine, too ... Good Luck in finding your perfect dog!

The dog is in the breeding and the training. I raised children along with Dobermans, and never had a single problem. My dogs were very well bred (I got them from reputable breeders), and very well trained. BUT I was a breeder, exhibitor and trainer myself. On the other hand, the only time one of my kids was ever bitten was by an overbred (puppy mill) Golden Retriever my neighbor owned.

That said, since you are probably not a professional trainer, my best recommendations are, if you want a large dog, a Chesapeake retriever, or a pug if you want a small one. I say a Chessie because they are not tremendously popular, and have many of the same attributes as a Lab. Since they're not overbred by quick buck breeders (like Labs and Goldens) they are likely to be more stable. A similar option would be a Flat Coated Retriever (they look like a black Golden Retriever), for the same reasons. Loyal, happy and sturdy. Pugs, even though they're popular, are very sturdy, tough little dogs and make excellent companions for kids.

Any dog, no matter what the breed, can be a loyal dog that isn't vicious. You need to train it correctly, if you're getting a purebred, a dog without inbreeding, whose parents are known to have good temperments will also be a plus. There are some breeds that are supposedly more loyal then others (pits, greyhounds, retrievers, weims, etc.) but it's really in the training

I had a Labrador Retriever from the time I was 13 and he just died last year. That would have made him 11 years old this Easter :( Anyways, he was the best. He was always protective of the family, but never mean or vicious in any way. They are great family dogs and extremely gentle around children.

Most dogs aren't vicious. Dobermans were bread to protect humans so maybe stay away from those ones. I keep seeing Labs in the answers but these dogs require A LOT of exercise. Most dogs will be a bit protective but as long as you teach the dog that you are the Alpha the dog shouldn't feel the need to protect or posses you.

There are many breeds of dogs that aren't vicious. My favorite is a Bichon Frise. They don't shed and are a nice lap dog that doesn't need a lot of exercise but need a lot of attention and need to be groomed regularly. They are loyal and love to be around people but don't like being alone for long periods of time and are strictly a house dog. They aren't for everyone but you gotta love em.

for real, and don't get me wrong, but a Pitbull can be one of the most loyal animals around. They are not vicious at all if taught right things.
They are excellent watch dogs and are great with kids.

The best ones are labs and golden retrievers. Our lab/Weimeraner mix knows, somehow, when a person is OK--she may bark like crazy when someone comes to the door, but she's never offered to bite anyone who did. She's also got the sweetest disposition of any dog I've ever had. She's very smart, too, even compared to German Shepherds I've had.

I am partial to German Shepherds. They are very loyal and trainable. Good dogs are decided based on training and the care and love you give them. All dogs can be good dogs and most dogs are extremely loyal.
