political issues are always the most highly discussed issues. Gay marriage, abortion, stem cell research, prayer in schools, the pledge of allegiance, evolution-creationism, gun control, the 10 commandments, all of which are absolutely, positively, completely, entirely, and totally unimportant. On a very, very, very, very, very rare occasion, you might hear a politician bring up an issue concerning the economy, but if you blink, you will miss it. Who cares about the billions of dollars of debt when we can whine and cry and moan back and forth at each other over issues that don't matter???

Are you serious? Some of the issues you mentioned are incredibly important! To turn that back to you...who cares about national debt when your sisters raped, turns out pregnant and is refused an abortion or when your Moms got a disease stem cell research has shown such promise in yet they keep shutting it down? Debt will still be here when we're dead.

Because people are stupid enough to believe that they are important, and the politicians are trying to get into power, so why not focus on the stupid stuff.
