Just wondering, I've read someplace in some magazines that some country singers don't eat much or not all all before they go on stage? Why is this? does it affect their voice? or is it something else?

Because the most important aspect of singing is your breathing and if you have a full stomach you can't sing as well, you can't breath as deeply when your stomachs full, try singing on a full stomach and then an empty one, you'll see the difference, singing is all in the breathing !!!!!!!

A lot of singers do this, regardless of the genre. Some don't want to deal with a full bladder on stage, others are concerned about having something that could make them feel sick or overstuffed too close to show time.

There are also specific foods people avoid: soda, and dairy are two prime examples. I've had a couple of interesting experiences with dairy. As a vocal music major I have a friend who refuses to have dairy during weekdays. At all. I think she's pushing it a bit far, but I haven't gotten her to stop yet. Personally I only follow the rule before I have a performance. I like my dairy too much to give it up like that.

Another time, my high school choir took a trip to a competition out of town. A few hours before we were going to sing we stopped at a mall food court to get some lunch. We were under strict orders from the director to not get anything that had dairy in it. She watched us like a hawk (all 30 of us), to see if anyone got anything with dairy in it. Let me tell you, it was HARD trying to find something to eat with no dairy in it.

My secret concoction for sore throats and laryngitis is strange in itself. Cayenne pepper mixed in orange juice. It sounds disgusting, I know, but it really works. Seriously. The only problem is it tends to make you a little constipated, so you can't take it right before show time.

Well, I dont know about COUNTRY singers..... but myself, if I eat more than a tiny snack before hitting the stage I feel bloated and cant project my voice. I cant properly use my diaphram to sing correctly. Also have "gunk" in my thorat from what Ive eaten. Its something I learned ealry in my career that I shouldnt eat right before a show.

Another, more basic answer is that it makes it less likely that u will need to visit the bathroom in the middle of ur set. I supppose this more drinking than eating, though, but the principle must be the same. Coffee is terrible. It goes straight through you. I do agree about needing to keep ur throat clear as well, though. Hope this helps

Some kinda of foods do affect your voice...

when i was in choir one time we had lunch before a performance and the teacher prohibited us from eating anything dairy related, apparently it stays in your throat and affects your singing...
