Whats the difference between filing SINGLE and MARRIED, WITHOLD AT A SINGLE RATE when filing through the year?

If they are both the same, then why are they a choice. I am sooo confused!

If you fill out your W-4 as married, but withhold at higher single rate, the tax withheld will be the same as if you had filled out the W-4 as single.
