I think we should call it the Vague Assurance Ring. If he alludes to giving you a promise ring on a yet-to-be-agreed date in the future, he should step up and buy a Vague Assurance Ring.

Everyone needs their jewelry props, dammit!

Another piece of steel with a shiny rock that needs to be bought to further the stereotypical relationship sounds like a win to me!

However, with respect to your idea, would the Vague Assurance ring go before or after sex, and before or after living together?

Seems like it brings up more questions rather than provide... "vague assurance."

"Everyone needs their jewelry props, dammit!" Haha! That's funny, but I do find it pointless to have a ring symbolizing a commitment that does not, and may not ever, exist. My boyfriend and I want a future together, but a promise ring wouldn't have occurred to him if it hadn't occurred to me. The way he saw it, two rings exist "engagement" and "wedding." Neither of which we're ready for. When we were visiting his family, we went shopping and I fell in love with a ring. He bought it for me, and in a discussion that followed we decided it would be our promise ring. We love it because it's an open symbol of our commitment and love for nearly two years, and the years that'll follow, and it makes nice guy repellent (I think that appeals to him most =).

actually the promise ring is just the promise of eventually getting engaged.. engaged is like you are getting married married.. a promise is just a promise, and promises get broken all the time!

i mean, engagements get broken all the time, so why not promise rings!?

besides, the diamonds in a promise ring are the smallest out there.. the next step down would just be a ring out of a 25 cent machine! lol

or just say you are "officially a couple" and "very serious.." that's good enough!

To me an engagement ring is a promise, which you will marry the guy. A promise ring is a sturdy option for once you extremely desire to be engaged and plan a destiny collectively, yet by way of age or the dimensions of time you have been relationship, it would be a undesirable time to fasten your self thoroughly into something.

How about a , "i don't give two hoots if he commits to me or not 'cause I got lots goin' on and don't want any commitment anyway" ring that we buy for ourselves? That wild get the message out, let us buy jewelry for a reason other than because we want to or like it lots, and if a gal is really in want, this is a great way to make a guy step it up, 'cause you know how they are if they think they can't have...

beans & rice!

ok, if you resort to the 1950s when people gave one an another a promise ring they got pinned first so....

it went you went steady, he gave the girl his letter jacket, then a varsity pin, then a promise ring, then an engagement ring, then a wedding ring.

haaa. A promise ring is just an easy way for a guy, who has no intentions ever marrying you, to string you along a little while longer!

Personally, I think promise rings are stupid. It's just half-a$$ engagement ring.

Well, guys shouldn't be forced into any commitment if they aren't ready but if anyone is just willing to sleep with a guy for good sex, that is all it is. Remember that one !!
