Sin to me is giving into emotional urges that cause self destruction and are acts of stupidity in themselves.Best way to sum it up is by the phrase, the wages of sin are death and this is very true. Being too involved with wine is a not bad in itself, but in the long run will kill you. Unrestrained sexual behavior can and will kill you, if you do not know why, I suggest you educate yourself why or go ask your mother about the birds and the bees. Greed can cause a person's down fall for many a times, a person has sacrificed what plenty they already have in hopes of more, yet losing it all or doing so at each others expense. Our politicians accepting lobbying money is a good example of short sighted greed, doing what it takes to gain power in the short term, while at the exspense of long term survival of our nation.

Sin is doing something evil.
I note that your proposed definition saves us from responsibility for our own sins. By calling it a lack of capability, you imply that it's something that was not given to us. God left the capability to empathize out of the recipe when he made us. Therefore, ultimately, I'm guessing, your point is that God is threatening to punish us for something that's really his own fault.
You really think we Christians are stupid, don't you? : ) You don't think that after 2,000 years we would have thought of that?
No, sorry buddy. Sin is our failure to do what is right, or our decision to do what is wrong.
If you want to know how we define right and wrong, you'll have to ask another question. : )

Thats a very good definition. Empathy allows us to determine what is right or wrong without the need of the bible.

That is a good definition of a personality disorder. (I'm not being rude and don't mean to offend you.) To me, a sin would be something that I do when I know it is wrong by every decent and moral standard recognized in society and by God. And yet I do it anyway...knowingly...that would be a sin to me. Blessings!

A sin is anything the church doesn't want you to do, especially if it keeps money from them, as a way to scare you, so they can control you. Love God in your own way, as long as you're not hurting yourself or others...

ACK! If that is true, then surely, I AM DOOMED!
I think sin is whatever it is that keeps us from God. Ever have an obsession? You dream, think, and eat that obsession. God wants us to be that way with Him.
