They were divided when the muslim community could not agree on who should lead after the death of Muhammed.

Sunni Muslims regard themselves as the orthodox and traditionalist branch of Islam. Sunnis venerate all the prophets mentioned in the Koran, but particularly Muhammad as the final prophet. All subsequent Muslim leaders are seen as temporal figures.

The Shia claimed the right of Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, and his descendants to lead the Islamic community. Ali was killed in a power struggle over who should be caliph, leader of the Muslims. His sons also struggled to capture the caliphate but died. These events gave rise to the Shia cult of martyrdom and the rituals of grieving.

Muhammad pbuh said in his hadith that after he died muslims and christians will be divided into more than 70 sects. There is no principle difference between Sunnis and Shias. The one regarded that the leader of muslim cummunity should be the descendants of the last prophet Muhammad pbuh and the other regarded that the leader of muslim community should be the descendants of the close friends of the late Muhammad pbuh too. There are other sects of muslim
such as Malik,Syafei,Hambali mazhabs. But in general they are muslims which should be united like a body.In India and Pakistan and also in Indonesia there is muslim sect called Ahmadiyah. This sect has a principle difference with other muslim sects because they regarded that Muhammad was not the last prophet.Until now according to them the last prophet was Gulam Ahmad born in India..I think this sect is misled the muslim community.

ALLAH subhabahu wa ta'aala won't positioned anybody in Paradise if the later claims that he's Sunni, Shia, and so on... the only CRITERION for Paradise for any person is -'SUBMISSION' ALLAH (Swt) will see who submits all his needs for the sake of ALLAH. for this reason, the call has no meaning. many human beings even interior the Sunnis dedicate Shirk, Bid'aah and so on. yet as you rightly stated, Cooperate on what we agree upon. the problem-unfastened folds of the Deen stay a similar. And in case we disagree, pardon one yet another... Thats the Prophet's spirit. in spite of everything a guy from any sect, a minimum of has stated the Shahadah. SO he's a brother!
