So I'm on day 4 of my cold from hell and it's preventing me from smoking or else I'll cough up my fifth lung. How the hell can you people live without nicotine? I've totally forgotten how boring life is without nicotine. So....how can you people do this?
(Hint: some former smokers can help me out greatly here.)

Well, I'm a former smoker. Smoked 2 packs a day and for a while up to 3 packs a day for 24 years. At the end of this month I will be 16 years smoke-free.
But as for dealing with stopping I have a few pointers:
1) Don't drink coffee. I know this will be even harder, but caffeine is a stimulant and so is nicotine. In order to stop one you need to stop the other, otherwise the process will be counterproductive.
2) Drink loads of water. Every time you get the craving drink water. Or decaffeinated herb teas, if you can stand that.
3) Walk, walk, walk.
4) Take cold showers whenever you get the craving. You can't smoke while showering, plus that will promote circulation fast. Or try taking an extremely hot showers as hot as you can stand it then alternate with cold. Go back and forth. Believe me this really works.
5) If you really have to have something in your mouth then suck on a cinnamon stick and keep them with you all the time
6) Find somebody who will support you in this. Whether it's a friend or relative or just going to a support group.
7) If you live in a stressful environment then you need to make some time for yourself. Get out of the house if you can and go to a place where you can be alone and sit, take slow deep breaths. Since you have a cold just do what you can. If you believe in God, pray for help, because when you're stopping you need all the help you can get.
Just think how much better you will feel when you get all that stored nicotine out of your system. It will all be worth it.
You will be in my prayers.

Hey now I would smoke Two cartons a day...No lie I promise. I got pregnant and that's what made me stop. No not that easy either. I went into a zombie like state. I chewed a lot of gum. I got into a club. I got involved with low rider magazine, The key is to keep busy. My son is now 16 yrs. old and stands at 6'1". So I did a good thing by stopping. Maybe you could save your fifth lung and stop before it is to late...LOL God Be With You...

I used to be a casual smoker and when I quit It was hard even as a occasional smoker. It took a while to get past the cravings especially in my truck on my way to work. when i would get one I would jam music really loud and sing as loud as I could till the Nick Fit was over!
Now I'm addicted to answers which is almost as bad!!
