I have a male cat and a female cat both not fixed yet. They are both almost a year. I am worried she doesn't seem to be in heat, but today he kept following her around and grabing her and bitting her neck. he wasnt doing anything sexual. she would then turn and begin to fight him. is this normal. I know i need to get them both fixed but I am getting the money together. they were given to me, it was a last minute thing and i wasnt prepared. I am just wondering should i keep them apart.

Biting of the neck is sexual. Your cats are negaging in foreplay. The female cat will usually play "hard to get" before she accepts him. Males do not go in heat. A mature intact male is always ready to spread his seed.
Instead of trying to get both fixed at once try one at a time. If you wait until you have enough money for both you could end up with a pregnant cat. Animal shelters usually charge a lower fee than the vet. I would recommend you get your female fixed first.

Oh yes it was sexual. Neck-biting is preparation to mount and yes, the ladies will fight off the advances. This is very normal and usually ends up with a cat getting pregnant.

Separate them for a few days and get one of them fixed ASAP.

Your female cat is definitely in heat. The biting of the neck and her fighting him is the beginning of making babys. Better get them apart quick, though it may already be too late. Good luck!

Yes, he's responding to her even if he's not got his butt end in the right position. Keep her in a separate room and get at least one of them fixed right away. Him preferably, since she should be OUT of heat when the vet spays her.

His actions say 'it's time to breed', so you do have two 'adult' cats at this point even if they're not a full year old yet.

Male cats don't go into "heat", only the female.

You may not think the female is in heat . . . but she's in heat. The male is smelling it and acting the way he does. He's trying to control her to mate with her. It's unpleasant for the female, but she'll reluctantly go along with his plan.

Better keep them apart unless you want a litter of kittens.
