How much of a hassle would it be to get a pistol as my first gun?

I love all guns,but I really feel more at home with pistols.I'll be 18 in april,so I figure if I got a rifle going to the range wouldn't be much trouble.Would I need someone who is 21 with me everytime I shot the pistol at the range?am I even allowed to transport the pistol without someone who is 21 and has a gun license?

You cannot purchase, own, or even possess a pistol until you are 21 without adult supervision. This is Federal law, not even a private citizen can sell you a handgun 'off the books' legally, it is a Federal felony to do so.
This is why all states require one to be 21 to be a Police officer, or even a security guard if armed with a firearm.

Used to when I was a kid you could own a muzzleloading or cap and ball revolver at any age (no federal age restrictions). You cannot own a cartridge handgun until you are 21. The law on the blackpowder guns I mentioned has probably changed since a person can easily aquire a cartrige conversion cylinder without any BATFE paperwork through the mail. I should know this since I have a curio &relics liscense, but I don't. If your interested in getting a cap & ball revolver contact a local dealer or BATFE directly. Good Shooting Young Gunner! I believe those cartridge conversion cylinders are treated as firearms and Federal forms have to be filed.

If I'm wrong, some one can correct me.

Look in the newspaper. You can buy a handgun from a private party without any paperwork or age checks.

It will be illegal so be careful with it.

Get a rifle, learn to shoot and start saving for your SIG P229.
