It is the purposeful copying of another's work so that you can present it as your own.
Cheating is cheating, whether you've done it accidently -- such as seeing the paper of the student seated next to you -- or purposefully copying another's words from a paper, book or the Internet.
Here is a link to a site on plagiarism and how you can avoid it in the future.

plagiarism is when u copy something somebody else has written and didn't give credit due such as quote. I am sure many many many people say "I didn't do it." So that would not be something plagiarized. So there really is no accidental. I guess it is possible. Usually the accidental part of it is when someone forgets to quote it or tries to change the wording but doesn't do it well enough. They should just know what they are doing cuz u will still get charged with plagiarism. Just like accidentally killing someone in a car accident. You get involuntary manslaughter. doesn't change the fact that you killed someone.

plagiarism is basically copying someone elses work and using it without proper attribution which makes it appear to be your own.
Accidental can be if you are studying very hard , you may accidentally use almost the exact wording in the textbook. Or using something as a quote but forgetting to specify it as such in the notes.
doing it on purpose would be looking something up and doing a cut/paste or copying it directly.

Plagiarism is taking someone else working and not giving them credit. Example if you had an older sibling that did a paper on Tom Sawyer and you copied the paper exactly the same way. Or taking something from a book and not giving credit to the author. This is illegal!!!! If you ever need help to make sure you are not doing this ask your teachers they will make sure you don't do it.

Plagiarism is definitely a form of any academic or literary theft or fraud done intentionally. So there is the term 'intellectual property' in which most countries worldwide recognize and conform to related laws/rules so that those practicing plagiarism must be identified, sued or fired. Such serious cases are not common. All information and the heart of the matter, please visit the attached wikipedia website.

Plagiarism was the final question on Jeopardy today. It is from a greek word meaning to kidnap. So basically you are stealling or kidnapping someone else's words, thoughts, processes and using them as your own. It is a big no no if you are writing a paper in both high school and college. You can actually fail a class by doing this.

it's when u take someone else's words from a book, magazine, etc. and you copy them down into a report, paper, essay, etc.
purposely would be looking up ayour essay topic on the internet and taking quotes out of it without giving the author any credit and u claim it as if u wrote it.
Accidental would be if you wrote down someone that just happened to be the same words as an author
for instance, if you are asking this for a homework question and you copy my answer and dont make it in your own words, it's plagiarism (purpose)

Plagiarism (from Latin plagiare "to kidnap") is the practice of claiming, or implying, original authorship or incorporating material from someone else's written or creative work, in whole or in part, into one's own without adequate acknowledgement. Unlike cases of forgery, in which the authenticity of the writing, document, or some other kind of object, itself is in question, plagiarism is concerned with the issue of false attribution. Plagiarism can also occur unconsciously; in some cultures certain forms of plagiarism are accepted because the concept can be interpreted differently.
Within academia, plagiarism by students, professors, or researchers is considered academic dishonesty or academic fraud and offenders are subject to academic censure. In journalism, plagiarism is considered a breach of journalistic ethics, and reporters caught plagiarizing typically face disciplinary measures ranging from suspension to termination. Some individuals caught plagiarizing in academic or journalistic contexts claim that they plagiarized unintentionally, by failing to include quotations or give the appropriate citation. While plagiarism in scholarship and journalism has a centuries-old history, the development of the Internet, where articles appear as electronic text, has made the physical act of copying the work of others much easier, simply by copying and pasting text from one web page to another.
Plagiarism is different from copyright infringement. While both terms may apply to a particular act, they emphasize different aspects of the transgression. Copyright infringement is a violation of the rights of the copyright holder, when material is used without the copyright holder's consent. On the other hand, plagiarism is concerned with the unearned increment to the plagiarizing author's reputation that is achieved through false claims of authorship
Both plagiarism and copyright infringement are concepts that vary by culture. In Western thought, both are viewed negatively by many. Some people assert that this is due to the relative affluence of these nations and the monopoly they hold on information. In many other cultures, plagiarism and copyright infringement are seen as either a product of necessity, or the most expedient means to an end.
