It depends on what kind of backpacking and where.
If you want to travel Europe, using hostels and trains, you need about $ 150 a day, more if you like to drink beer or other alcoholics.

I backpack extensivly in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Other than food, once you buy equipment, there is not much cost. You can find many sites to help, but start with www.backpacker.com
As to difficulty, that depends on the trail selected. When I started, in my early 30's, I bought a trail guide, some cheap equipment, and headed out. I have since upgraded my equipment and expanded my horizons. All I can say is to do it and find if you like it. Good luck.

I've backpacked through Asia and Australia/New Zealand, catching an occasional train or bus or ox cart, when my feet needed a rest.
The only time I would really call hard or difficult was in a monsoon when I really just wanted to sleep and couldn't.
I spent about $20 a day for food and public transportation, and my equipment totalled about $250.
