I'm in college and not depressed or anything. I like my roomates, quite a bit actually. I'm not introverted, or shy, or for that matter lacking in social skills. I just don't seem to have the urge to talk to them- at all, or anyone else for that matter. I'm not shy, per say, its just that I don't want to speak. I know this isn't a very through explaniation, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd like to know.

-I should have also pointed out that this has only taken place during the past week.

Has anything big happened lately? A death in the family? Have you had an argument or disagreemant with someone? Has your roommate done something that you really didn't like lately? A breakup with a girlfriend? Have you suffered a major dissapointment lately, and then maybe denied it, saying "it's not that big a deal" or something like that? Or maybe you're becoming disenchanted with your major or college. Try to look into yourself and find out what's going on inside lately. This could be a symptom of depression or an expression of anger. It's unlikely you would do this "for nothing". And just because you're depressed(if you are) doesn't mean you have to go shove pills down your throat. Depression is a natural, healthy response to loss, dissapointment or disenchantment. It's just when it goes on for too long or you become suicidal that pills should be considered.

sometimes we just need to be quiet so we can think things out or over and just take a break for the norm. If this is what your talking about - I think its normal - I hate to say this without sounding stuck up or something but when I have noticed others going through this like some of my friends it always seems to turn out to be the more highly intelligent ones. I have no idea why this is - except for maybe they just have more to contemplate!?

As a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, I can tell you that for someone who doesn't want to speak, you put more information, appropriate and supporting information, in your brief question than I've seen in quite a few questions here in YA. So my answer to you might be a question. What's your question? If you're as versatile and outgoing and appropriate in your speech here, why are you asking for "ideas". You seem to have "the bases covered" as I would consider them for an Intake Evaluation. One question did come to mind as I was closing here and previewing my answer. Are you using any medicines or drugs or alcohol in any of your various situations? That could easily be a causative factor. God Bless you.

There's nothing wrong with being a man of few words. But sometimes for the sake of the household peace you need to take the initiative to communicate. It may keep wrongful judgments from being made and add peace to the household.

Eh, people go through stages where they're a little antisocial. It's not anything to worry about, unless you're really hostile to people. You'll probably snap out of it before too long.

It's just your personality. I am exactly like that. I hate talking to strangers, neighbors, children or even relatives. Talking to family sometimes make me unhappy, so I try to talk as little to them as possible. You are not abnormal.

Sometimes after you get through all the b.s.ing (which can take months), you find that you really don't have that much in common. Then what do you say?

There are lots of times I don't feel like talking. Sometimes I just like to listen. Just enjoy your "quiet" time.
