If not, do you want to improve yourself? How can you do so? If you already are good at controlling yourself, what are your tips for those who may not have such good self control? How does this make you feel?

"The most excellent Jihad is that for the conquest of self.

The exercise of religious duty will not atone for the fault of an abusive tongue.

A man cannot be a Muslim till his heart and tongue are so.

Whoever hath been given gentleness, hath been given a good portion in this world and the next.

Whoever suppresseth his anger, when he hath in his power to show it, God will give him great reward.

That person is wise and sensible who subdueth his carnal desires and hopeth for rewards from God; and he is an ignorant man who followeth his lustful appetites, and with all this asketh for God's forgiveness.

May God fill the heart of that person who suppresseth his anger with safety and faith.

"Give me advice," said someone. Muhammad said, Be not angry."

Muaz said, "At the time of my being dispatched to the judgeship of Yemen, the last advice Muhammad gave me was this, 'O Muaz! be of good temper towards people.'"

He is not strong and powerful who throweth people down; but he is strong who witholdeth himself from anger.

No person hath drunk a better draught than that of anger which he hath swallowed for God's sake."

lol Quite a cogent observation. One is of course always controlled by self. What we mean by self control is the ability to rationally override an emotional decision we have logically concluded is bad or inappropriate. So your 'guess' is fairly accurate. One aspect of your self is controlling the other. Should a man make love to his wife. Absolutely. Should he do it in the grocery store because she looked so sexy when she bent over to pick up a box of cereal? No. He should have a little self control.

Control is part of the code by which I live.

8. The Code is CONTROL
Never lose control to anger or be baited by hostility.
Never strike a woman unless your very life hangs in the balance.
Never violate the weak or innocent.
Never tolerate those who do.
Control is the mark of a disciplined mind, a sign of the greatest warriors.

These days I'd say I control myself 85-90% of the time, and I'm working on that last 10-15%. And you're right, it's been through MUCH, MUCH work on myself - turning the camera inside and taking a good hard look at ME that has helped me make the change to better control of myself. With that better self control my happiness and satisfaction with life has increased 100-fold!

I come from a different view then you my friend. However, I have alot of self-control and it has not come by my own strength but by the Almighty.
Jesus Christ has given me all the self-control that I need to help overcome my fleshly desires. I am still being worked on, but I have quit alot of sinful things through the Lord Jesus Christ.
In fact if you ever get a hold of the Holy Bible there is a scripture you can read in Gal 5:22-23
The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and SELF-CONTROL.
See Jesus Christ sends you the Holy Spirit and it is this that helps you to overcome those strong temptations.
May you discover Him for yourself.

The more I study the word of God amd my Lord Jesus, the more I learn self control and what it means. You can improve yourself by study of the problem, by increasing your awareness or the problem and by finding the reasons you lack it and repair them. Every day.

This reminds me of a verse in the Bible. "Be angry, and sin not." Controlling my temper has come through years of trial and error. There is something to be said for growing older and wiser! Blessings!

No, I have horrible impulse control, especially when it comes to money. I wouldn't mind learning more about Islam, but I seriously doubt it's the answer to my problem. I have borderline personality disorder.

Purely self-control is a difficult thing but we can gain this by a strong belief in God and his prophet, their love and self-respect.
