Following a bout of illness, Van Gogh felt renewed and he wrote to his brother about how invigorated he was after painting, "The Starry Nights." He did the painting while in an Asylum at Saint-Remy in 1889.

There's no mystery in his meaning; it is quite literal. He painted the infinity he saw in the sky and he found the twinkling stars in the sky enchanting.

be aware that there is something beyond the stars, an infinite being that is more powerful than you or i. once you realise this you will see the true beauty of the world and everything around you. that's what it could mean, well, what it means to me anyway.

it could however, mean that he was mad as a hatter and had just decided to chop his own ear off! either one works!

It means look at your blessings and life is great after-all.

Don't believe it though, Van Gogh was crazy. He put a bullet through his head, missed his brain and bled to death in a wheat field in his brother's arms. He also gave his right ear to his girlfriend.

first of all, he was clinically depressed (manic), or maybe just insane...he cut off part of his ear to give to a prostitute he was obsessed with (also he had VD and could only buy sex) BUT SOMETIMES THE CRAZY ONES GET IT BETTER THAN THE REST OF US...

to me it seems to be about perspective... realizing how small you are in an infinate universe and marveling at the simple gift of existence
