The RF modulator eliminates the need for a VCR in the loop. If you want to use a VCR (which may or may not work because of the copy protection they have in DVD players and VCRs), you have to connect the video out (RCA Cable) of the DVD player to the audio/video in plugs on the VCR, then hook the VCR to the TV using coax cable (the one with the threads). Then, tune your TV to channel 3 or 4 and make sure your VCR is on and on the correct video input setting (how to do this varies depending on your VCR). Then, it should work. If it doesn't, go ahead and get the RF modulator. That will work for sure.

yes you have to have a rf modulator, a device that converts a video and audio device to a rf output ( like cable or antenna connection. check out this link. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103095&cp=&sr=1&origkw=rf+modulator&kw=rf+modulator&parentPage=search
