Depression can occur to people who are on top of the world. I had a great job, nice house, a loving family, a few friends and I suffered from major depression. It turned out to be a chemical imbalance. It took me 5 years of experimenting to find the right combination of medications and now my depression has been in remission for 4 years. Medication was my second chance at happiness.

Depression is an emotion and emotion is a complex subject. Look it up by typing in "emotion" in Yahoo! web search; a number of links comes up. Wikipedia has a good summary. I was taught there are 6 basic emotions we all are born with: fear, anger, depression or sadness, joy, surprise and disgust. Others,(Plutchik), gives 8 and there are many more theories.
If an emotion is there, to be expressed spontaneously, it is not necessarily a result of life's vicissitudes but of our perception of them. The emotion is natural but what our experience has taught us effects the origin of it. An emotion can be separate from a feeling. One can be depressed, I think, and not feel down but act down.
Emotions are associated with chemical events in the brain but consciousness is much more than the material functioning of the brain in my opinion. What science knows of the material functioning of the mind is practically nothing.
The use of antidepressants to control depression are the result of the fact that they seem to help but how is not understood. So a chemical imbalance. in my opinion, may be there but it may also be the result of a perfectly natural but un-understood operation of consciousness. Feelings are "qualia" (look "feeling" and "qualia" up too) that are not material but they are all important to the individual experiencing them.
Good luck with your depression, good health, peace and love!

Well I used to think depression was about freaky people and nutballs. Then one day it hit me like a wave after a doctor ,misprescribed me a medication for mild anxiety. I am now convinced that it is chemical and not just "in your head". The drug altered my brain to a point of no return.

I reckon depression is a result of the way we process lifes experiences, to the point where we feel like there is nothing we can do about it. Life can suck but people are still capable of being resilient to hard times. So no depression isnt a result of unfortunate experiences and things not going the way we want. Its a result of not being able to handle lifes bad times.

Given your self diagnosis it's hard to answer your question. I would suggest some research on the subject to form a better understanding of depression to frame a better question.
