The story is that the Catholics were copying the Pope while facing him while learning how to sign the cross so they learned it backwards.

Genuflecting is getting on one knee. The Sign of the Cross is practiced by Roman Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Anglicans, and Lutherans.

In Latin-Rite Roman Catholicism, the order is up, down, left, right.

In Eastern-Rite Roman Catholicism/Orthodoxy, you put your thumb and first two fingers together for the Trinity, and your index and ring fingers together for Christ's two natures, then you go up, down, right, left.

In Anglicanism, you go up, down, left, right, centre of the chest.

I open my hand and touch my brow, and say,
"In the name of the Father"

Then I touch my heart with my hand, and say,
"and of the Son."

I touch my shoulders left and right, and say,
"and of the Holy Spirit"

I say,
"Amen."

The Sign of the Cross is
+ A statement of belief in the Holy Trinity
+ A statement of belief in and thanksgiving for Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross
+ God blessing us
+ Us Blessing God ("I will bless the Lord at all times")
+ A prayer using your entire body
+ A Bible quote (Matthew 28:19)

In French: Au nom du père, Et du fils, Et du Saint-Esprit. Amen.
In Latin: In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
In Spanish: En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén.

With love in Christ.

The Sign of the Cross. As Catholics make this "cross-forming" gesture, they recite:

"In the name of the Father," as one touches their forehead.
"and of the Son," as one touches their heart.
"and of the Holy. . ." as one touches their left shoulder.
". . .Spirit. Amen." as one touches their right shoulder.

It's very simple, yet powerful, prayer in which one professes their belief in the Holy Trinity.
