left ring finger

It doesn't matter which hand or which finger.

You may want to avoid wearing in on the finger where an engagement ring is worn (this varies by country; left ring finger in US, UK, Brazil, and right ring finger in many other countries). People may mistake it for an engagement ring, and a "promise ring" doesn't signify that level of commitment.

The third finger of your right hand (the one before the pinky).

Engagement and wedding bands are worn on the left hand, third finger. The 'mirror opposite'.

Additional: A promise ring implies intent but not commitment, which is why it isn't supposed to be worn on the left hand ring finger but rather it's mirror opposite.

i believe promise rings are supposed to be worn on the right hand ring finger.. but i always wore mine on my left hand ring finger.. until i got my engagement ring.. at which point i put my promise ring on my right ring finger..

but remember, it's your ring and you can wear it where you want!

Right hand, ring finger. You don't want anyone to mistake it for an engagement ring.
