I don't think suicidal thoughts necessarily indicate depression though the two are commonly associated. I think the most important thing that would make the distinction is your reaction to and emotions during such thoughts.
I'd suspect depression if you think about fatally wounding yourself and subsequently (because of the thought of hurting yourself): think, "That would be nice;" feel a sense of calm (or minor comfort or escape from a stressor) come over you; or you do/think things to make it happen.
On the other hand, there may just be the thought. Maybe it just annoys you or worries you or scares you. Just because the thoughts are there doesn't mean you want them to happen. Well, that's all theory, but in psychology there is the term 'intrusive thoughts.' They are basically unwanted, unrequested, and persistent thoughts.
I included a few links for sites on intrusive thoughts below. I didn't read much of them so I can't vouch for their credibility. (It's late and I'm tired but I still thought I could give some good info regardless.) If you don't find good info on either of them, try to google what's in parentheses: ("intrusive thoughts" suicide) or ("intrusive thoughts").
The thoughts suck either way, though. Maybe they're meant to draw focus to something being neglected? I don't know. I've done research, read psychologists' theories, and devised my own theories, but psychology will (I suspect) forever remain a guessing game - er, a process of trial and error.

Not depressed but definitely missing something. I don't know what term would be used but its an interesting thing.
They say the more you talk to friends or family about suicide the less likely you are to do it. If you hold it in you're just boiling in your own juices & may one day 'pop!'.
I like black humour so my thoughts often run to the dark & morbid side of life & I have a little giggle.

No, it's probably major depression. That's what I was diagnosed with and I thought life was too painful to stay alive. Luckily my doctor doubled my dose of medication and my depression has been in remission for 4 years now.
