It's important that he feel burdened with guilt at a young age... That way they can convince him that he needs 'saved', and other assorted tripe...

Your son isn't a sinner! As pagans, you and I don't believe in sin, just doing something that isn't right, and taking a pudding pop.....! I guess Catholics require confession as a part of their church, that's their thing and all that. I am glad for the sake of your son, and my son, that it is not a part of paganism!! '
There does come a time, I think, in a person's life, when just talking about a problem does help, and "confession" is good for you, although I dislike the word, I would rather say "coming clean and taking responsibility for your actions."
A six year old is, as you said, too young for all that. If he misbehaves as any kid does, then you deal with it in an age appropriate way. Confession aint' the way, in my opinion, not at that age.
You are a very good mom!
Blessings,

Confession came from scripture - John 20:21-23 "Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.' And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.'"
When you say that your son is going to a Catholic Bible Study with his grandparents, are you bringing him up in the Catholic faith? If not, be sure to let the Bible Study teachers know that. In that case, he would not be required to go. For those entering the Catholic faith, the 1st sacrament is Baptism, the 2nd is Confession, which children start at about the age of 7 the last time I checked. That is the age where children are supposed to be able to distinguish right from wrong.
Many psychologists who are not Catholic say that Confession is a really healthy practice.
Confession is not intended to make one feel guilty afterwards. It is to bring the person closer to God through His Divine Mercy. It is a beautiful cleansing experience and people feel are supposed to feel good after Confession - not bad.
God bless you and your son!

Sins are made up allegories to answer in the controlling sense for what comes as natural or pleasurable to human beings. Sex, masturbation, lying, stealing, coveting, whatever. Sometimes lying is helpful if the lie means someone's life may be spared. Most often than not, sex is viewed as the ultimate of sins, whereas killing is viewed as heroic. Go figure. A six year old has a great imagination! I hope he makes something up. Something real unbelievable, so that the priest will make a puzzled face at it. You know, beat the crazy people at their own game...

Well in the Catholic Church it is essential to go to confessions.
Wouldn't it makes them all the more self critical and guilty feeling? I didn't confess as a child.
If he isn't Catholic he doesn't need to do to confessions, if he's just checking out the church. Actually you have to be Catholic to go to confessions.

I know. Children are normally far too carefree and innocent to actually do something worthy of being mentioned during a confession... I mean let them maintain their innocence instead of being told that they are bad.

No one needs to confess anything to any man, just to God in prayer. Everyone is born in sin, we all have inherited it from Adam. Children need not to be baptized or confess sins until they reach the age of knowing right from wrong and that will differ slightly with each child. To get baptized is a commitment coming from the knowledge of God and devoting yourself to him and exercising faith in Christ Jesus. You must have full understanding of that commitment.

Your child do not appear to be stealing but helping himself to a snack. HOw can his grandma think this was stealing especially a child at that age. It's family food not family feud.

God says we are born into sin. Though it is said that children who do not know right from wrong are an exception. If your son knows right from wrong than yes he is a sinner like you and me.

The idea of the confession and the sins are completely absurd.
