I see Tartrazine in a lot of candies. I've been told, it's really bad for you. Is there concrete evidence that it is bad? If so what are the health problems associated with it? And if it is bad, why is it in our foods?

Tartrazine is simply yellow food dye. It is only bad for you if you are allergic to it. If you are allergic to it, you might suffer hives, atopic dermatis, a rash or asthma.

If you have asthma and are an aspirin user, you have a greater risk of being allergic to tartrazine.

Food dyes are used to give foods a more appealing appearance. They serve no nutritional purpose. However, many foods would not appeal to the consumer in their natural state so food coloring is often added. Another food dye that many people are sensitve to is red.
