I just put in the request. Has anyone traveled Space A before? Is it reliable? Is there often open seats?

I have traveled Space A before and it works just like it says. You sign up for a flight and if there are any empty seats after ticketed passengers you can get a seat if there are enough or you are high enough on the list. As for reliability, well that depends on the season. If you are trying to travel during a normal heavy travel time, such as the beginning or end of summer or the holidays you may have a longer wait. If you are traveling during the non peak travel times you may even get a flight the day you sign up for one.

Traveling Space A is a hit and miss thing on a good day and a night mare on a bad day.

The way it works is
1) you go to the Terminal and sign up for space A and get put into the system or on a list with a time stamp.
2) The flight loads it's cargo and decides how many seats it has available for pax (passengers)

3) There are 5 categories I believe cat.1 being first priority cat 5 being last.
Cat 1 are military on ordersCat 2 are emergency leave
cat 3 are mil personnel on leave
Cat 4 are dependants unaccompanied by sponsors
cat 5 are retirees

The available seats are filled by category first then by first signed up for first seated.

Some flights have baggage requirements and you can not get on the fligh if your baggage is too heavy or you have too many bags.

When traveling Space A try to keep yourself limited to one bag of 25 pounds or less. The med-evac flights if they let pax on board usually limit it to 25 pounds max hand carried.

You could be waiting for several days trying to get out on a flight. Make SURE if you are on leave or have to be somewhere at a certain time or date that you have enough funds to buy civillian transportation (plane, train, or bus)

Also, when traveling space A, make sure to wear something other than jeans & T-shirt. If you get a chance to go on a VIP flight, you will have to have on other than sneakers for shoes, long pants, and a shirt with a collar (polo shirt at least).

I took Space A the first time and it took me nearly half of my 30 days leave to get from RAF Mildenhall in the UK to St Louis where I finally broke down and bought a comercial flight on home.

It depends when and where you are going. For instance, if there are routine med-evac flights and you are going to a place that has routine med-evac flights, you are likely to not have to wait too long until a seat is available but if you are trying to fly to, say, Spain, you may have to keep showing up day after day until a seat is available and work out all sorts of contorted paths to get there.

It works as long as you are flexible. We didnt have a problem and were laid over in Hawaii for a day....no big deal.
