Myself and my friend are planning to drive a rental car from New York to Toronto via Niagara falls. I am 21 and he is 18, we're both British citizens, however we are concerned about what paperwork we should bring for crossing into Canada and returning to the US? Should we inform the rental company about our plans

I'm from Huddersfield, UK and have travelled over the border between Canada and the USA (and vice versa) twice a year for the last 5 years with all the major rental car companies e.g Alamo, National, Hertz, etc. All of them have allowed me to cross the border for no extra charge.

As a British citizen you do not need a visa to visit Canada. Show the border patrol your passport and they'll give you a customs card to fill in and ask you a few questions. In fact, the border control into Canada is too simple! Getting into the States is far more time consuming in terms of the visa waiver scheme, photos, finger print scanning, etc.

If you're flying into the US first, you'll have taken care of US border security anyway. Have a good time and don't worry about it! At your ages though, you may have to pay more to rent the car but who cares - it's a great experience!

Having arrived in the US, you should both have passports and a valid I-94.

Your I-94 may not be stamped for multiple entry ... if this is the case, you'll basically need to reapply for one when you return to the US (so bring all the documentation you needed to enter the US in the first place).

As both Britain (UK) and Canada are members of the Commonwealth of Nations, you do not need a specific visa to enter Canada. But you will need to have your passports handy.

Driving the car across - check with the rental agency. Therre may be additional insurance premiums, or ... if you've chosen a local, low-budget operation ... you may be limited to one or two states. If, on the other hand, you've rented from a major player (like Hertz, Avis, National, etc), there shouldn't be any real issue. Unless perhaps you're leaving the car in Toronto ... in which case there will definitely be a "drop off" fee of some sort, if they allow it at all.

You will have to have your passports with you, though. A UK driver's license is generally not recognized as a valid form of identification at the smaller border crossings, and probably won't be recognized if you happen to be stopped for a traffic infringement while in Canada.

you do need to inform the rental compnay !!!! Or any accidents and your liable for the whole care!
You are british guess what unlike what that other guy said about needing your VISA ....Canada is a former british colony( unlike the states by the way ) independance in the 80's but still hold the monarchy as head ...YOU DO NOT NEED A VISA ..just bring your british passports with you .

YOU will also have to inform the renatl company because I know from a friends experience that when its a rental car they asked to see the rental aggrement at times .Just contact the US embassy about getting back ....I think it should be okay but not American lol ...so just check with their laws

My aunt and uncle are from the UK they rented a rv in Canada and took it through the US so I do not see a problem .
They were just visiting both countries and wanted to go on a road trip

It is mandatory to inform the rental company that you are bringing it across the border. But that's all. If they try to charge you more for that, get another rental company.

All you need is your passport for in and out trip. I am sure you have that for getting into the US already. UK citizens do not need visas for US or Canada.

Definitely inform the rental company...you may have to purchase insurance for the duration of time in Canada and some companies will not allow it at all...I once tried to rent a care to drive several states away on a job interview and that particular company only insured their vehicles for the surrounding five states and I had to go to another firm to rent from.

As to documents, I should imagine your passports (and visas if you were required to have them to enter the US) should be sufficient...but I am not sure of that.

CIC demands engaged couples to be married earlier you could save on with for everlasting residency. given which you have made plans to get married, CIC does not see it as a situation which you get married now fairly than later. you're actually not the sole ones, Many different couples have been on your difficulty. you have not got a call if he needs to stay in Canada. i think of one in all you suggested the incorrect factor on the border. You or he would desire to have in no way stated getting married. Then your b/f would have been allowed in like prevalent. So now you will desire to the two get married or circulate stay in his u . s . a . and alter into complication-loose-regulation. (that demands 3 hundred and sixty 5 days of legally living collectively, combining bills and and function evidence to coach that 3 hundred and sixty 5 days). sure he can try to save on with for a artwork enable - yet whilst he's requested if he has ever been denied get right of entry to to Canada, he would desire to declare sure and clarify why. for this reason he would have issues getting decrease back into Canada provided that he has already indicated that he will stay in Canada. Getting married extremely is the sole thank you to get him into Canada legally. Finance does not rely. sure you (the canadian) would desire to have a job or income of a few sort as long as that's not welfare, yet there is not any low cut back off income point you will should have, so as to assist him. additionally, as others have suggested, he won't be allowed to artwork for some months collectively as the applying is in technique (it extremely is the reason you pick income or a job to assist him) and he would desire to enlarge his targeted visitor prestige so he does not exchange into unlawful.

I have rented from Hertz in Buffalo and driven into Canada with no problem at all. They did not mind at all and did not charge more. No special insurance needed. You do not need visas to visit either the U.S. or Canada, so all you need is your passports..

You should phone the border on both sides. you may be o.k. coming into Canada, but getting back into the U.S may pose a problem, there are so many restrictions now.
