A guest room is a just that... a room. If you're lucky, you'll get your own private bathroom with that.

A guest house is a house on your grounds, smaller than your house, but large enough to have guests stay in it. A guest house will usually be fully equipped, will have more than one room, a living area, dining area, a kitchen, etc. You are actually in a separate building from your host.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll say it in photos...

Just as the name implies, a guest "room" is a room in your home designated for visiting guests. A guest "house" is a separate house for guests. Although a guest house does not need to include a kitchen, etc. it at least includes a bedroom and a bathroom and be separate from the main home.

Think about it room......house. Your answer is in the question.

People with an extra bedroom inside their own house will turn it into a guest room for when friends or family visit and will need somewhere to sleep over.

A guest house would be reserved for people who are rich enough to actually have another small house (usually behind) the main house. Basically like a small cabin where people can stay overnight.

guest room is just the room in your house, and the guest house would be a small house attached to your house. It might include a porch or a backyard or something of that sort.
