Can a Canadian citizen fly within the US without a passport? For example, crossing the border into the US by car and then flying from Seattle to Orlando? Has anyone done this?

Eventually you wont be able to, but right now you can. You are fine until sometime next year when the rules change again, and you will need a passport to drive into the US.

I have a friend that drives to Seattle then flies to Vegas and has been doing so for years.

"oneil..."is very misinformed. You do not need a passport to fly anywhere within the United States...including the parts of the United States that are not physically attatched to the "lower 48"...like the Virgin Islands, Guam, Hawaii. you must have your passport to board an international flight, but none of these is "international". Territories and possessions of the united states ARE part of the united States and travelling to them is just like going from Colorado to Wyoming. You can always call the airline to confirm. They may prefer passports, but they are not required.

for now, yes

But a passport is the best form of ID if you need to cash a travelers' check or the like.

You will probably need a passport next year, unless the Yankee comes to his senses and puts someone intelligent in the White House

The only time you need your passport is for entry/exit. Flying anywhere in CONUS (Continential US) no problem. But if your flying to Hawii, Puerto Rico, Guam or the Virgin Islands (US Terrotories) you need your passport.
