If the answer is yes, how can we go about doing this? Through legislation or by brute force?

YES! And I suggest brute force. Like a knock over the head.
But I agree with you and I dislike those...
... who wouldn't know real art if it smacked them in the head...
... who just walk into a parlour that they haven't even researched...
... and get a tattoo that they pick off the wall...
... and who worry if it can be covered easily...
... and who worry what their significant other thinks of their tattoos...
... and who wonder why their artist can't draw a custom back piece "while they go grab a bite to eat" like on Miami Ink...
... and who pick a design and then try to attach some significance to it after the fact...
... and who wonder how much it will hurt because they "like totally have a low tolerance for pain"...
... and who wonder how long it will take for them to get back to their tanning ritual after getting a heart tattooed on their hipbone...
... and who are 13 and think they should get a tattoo RIGHT NOW because they know what they want and their minds will never change!

I truly hate those reality shows......they are as far from reality as can be. They are so set up and staged. When people ask the questions on here about how to get those people to tattoo them or how they can find a picture of a tattoo they saw done on one of those shows it drives me nuts.
They make it look like people just randomly walked in to the shop, told some heart wrenching story about a tattoo they want, it is magically drawn up in 15 minutes......
Gives people such an unrealistic view of getting tattooed and I know our artist hates those shows. I think it makes their job a lot harder. Ok, there's my rant.

I dont think boring people should be banned from getting tattoes....apparently it makes for good conversation and makes people think about whether they should be allowed or not. Since when was it anyones business what anyone else did with their bodies and money?

Wow - I never thought of looking at it that way. But now that you mention it, I have 27 tattoos (got one a few hours ago!) and I put a ton of thought into each one that I design and each one has very special meaning to me.

So, yeah, it does bother me sometimes when I see people with "hip tattoos" "cool tattoos", etc. You ask them why they got that design and they say "it's cool", "it's cute". Tattoos are not a trend or a fad.

And . . .

If you have to ask how to hide it -- don't get one

If you have to ask if it hurts -- don't get one

If you have to ask "can I get a good job with a tattoo" -- don't get one

If you have to ask people on Yahoo Answers "I want a tattoo, but I don't know what, can you tell me"? -- don't get one

And . . .

If you do not have tattoos or you do not like tattoos, then please stop giving advice in the Tattoo Section.

it will never happen. the boring person's money spends just as good as yours. thus, most artists will continue to tattoo them with anything they wish.

People can do whatever they want with their bodies. Who are you to dictate them? Its not your body is it? Then shut up.
