1 Chronicles 17:3  And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
4  Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:

The answer to your question is :

"Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:"

GOD told Nathan to tell David that he will not build the temple of GOD. Solomon, David's son, built the temple.

it states that god asked nathan to say unto david " not to build a house for him " going on to next verse 5 " for i have not dwelt in an house since the day that i brought up israel unto this day: but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tavernacle to another. "

This is a wholly uncontroversial verse. It merely says that the one to build a House of GOD would not be David.
