I've heard of people using foam as the top layers and covering it in icing, the bottom layer being real cake, so after the couple cuts into the bottom layer, then in the back the guests are served cake from a big sheet cake. I'm sure I've been to a wedding where they did this because the SECOND they rolled the cake in the back the servers where bringing out cut cake.
Never heard of renting one though.

I have never heard of that. Renting a cake would only be a good idea for pictures. If you rent a cake for eating, well, what do you do when it is time to give it back? For the prices she has for renting those cakes, you would be better off buying one.

No. I have never heard of it. If you go to the site, you see that the bride and groom "cut a piece of real cake from the fake cake"....not sure how that works!!! Then the cake is taken in the back and a sheet cake is cut and served to the guests. Hmmmm.......so you have to pay to rent the fake cake (with the little portion of "real cake" in there somewhere......then you have to pay for a sheet cake too. Doesn't seem like it would be cost effective....it seems to cost more in my book. If you want to use a sheet cake (as many do), then just buy a small cake for you and your hubby to cut for pictures. To be honest, many times I have never seen the cake at a reception so don't go wasting money on renting a fake one!

Actually I think it is a good idea.
For my wedding we ordered a small fancy cake just for the cake ceremony. We then bought 2 sheet cakes (that were amazing) and the caterers took away the fancy cake sliced up al the fancy cake and the sheet cakes and no one ever knew.
So if you want a real cake that is another option, but if you have your heart set on a huge amazing cake then this is a great idea!

It's really no different then doing the old trick of having your baker making a faux cake for display while a simple sheetcake is cut up in the back. But I think for the prices she is asking for you can (a.) make a cake yourself if you have the talent or (b) find a less decorated cake for the same price.

Weird. And her cakes are fugly. I've heard of people having a small display cake for the bride & groom to cut and a large sheet cake in back that is cut for guests. That makes more sense to me.

I think it's a pretty good idea... but I don't know that it's better than having your baker making a fake cake out of styrafoam and icing it, while having a sheet cake in the back...
