Does brackish estuary count as ocean? If so it was last night, caught an undersized seatrout, some catfish, and some stuff, not sure what the real name is but a lot of locals call them silver perch... little saltwater pan - or - bait fish... one of them hooked itself up through the roof of the mouth and out near the eye, so I threw it back out and had something quite large take it and snap the line on me (what I get for keeping something like that on my light tackle rod.)
Now, if we're talking ocean big saltwater with tides and currents and waves, I caught some nice mangrove snapper a while back at one of the local inlets... yum, yum.
Just an aside, recreational fishing, even hook and cook doesn't do nearly the environmental/ecological/population damage as commercial fishing, and can actually (when used correctly) help local environments when anglers both onshore and on boats make it a point to pick up some garbage every time we go out. Don't retire your tackle just because you want to save the world, that's all the more reason to keep it... think of all the bycatch that is killed merely because people want to eat tuna or shrimp... save the oceans, catch and eat local seafood.

The other day I went on the pier where it was 50 fathoms deep, and used a makerel lask for bait and just before high tide,i got a thumping bite on my rod. When I reeled in to the surface I saw it was a handsome deep sea bass. I lowered my landing net and pulled it up,it weighed 6bls.

No, I haven`t done any fishing for many years. I became an " Eco-Warrior" and started to help save and protect my fellow creatures, - much to the disgust of my uncle, who is an absolute fishing fanatic!
