Area of a rectangle is simply length x width. The trick here is that one is in feet and the other in yards, so you need to convert one to the other. So, you could say it is 2 yds by 1 yd (since 6 ft = 2 yds) and the area would be 2x1 = 2 sq yds. OR you could convert both to feet so it would be 6 ft by 3 ft (since 1 yd = 3 ft) and the area would be 6x3 = 18 sq ft.

ok, area = length mutilplied by width and all units must be the same So convert feet to yards or yards to feet , the answer will be sq yards or sq feet according to which way you chose to convert

6 feet x 1 yard is either
6' x 3' = 18 sq feet ( 1 yard = 3 feet)
or
2 yards x 1 yard = 2 sq yards ( 6 feet is 2' x 3' = 2 yards )

a sqare yard is 3' x 3' = 9 sq feet so 2 sq yards = 18 sq feet
are two answers are the same just expressed in different units .

I think that if you have a rectangle that is say 6ft. long by 1 yard (which is 3 feet) you would multiply length by width to come up with square footage of rectangle
