Like most Brits I tend to get the impression that Americans are obsessed with religion.

If this is true then is it possible for an individual to become an elected politican (or even President) if he/she is an atheist?

I don't think that will happen for a long time, shame though because most of the world is at war, down to religion, it would be nice if one of the super powers of the planet was run by someone who is not bias in any way, thus sensible in their policy! religion has no place in politics!

Yes, it is possible... though most likely not probable as the majority are Christians... and most of them are told by their own pastors that Atheists are not "trustworthy". Of course, I have yet to personally meet a Christian who has known an Atheist to be able to make that type of judgement towards them. But, our laws do state that religion can have Nothing to do with taking a gov't office. But then, they are voted in and if they make it public before running for the office that they are atheist, it's not very likely that they will be voted for. Personally, I would love to see an atheist as president.... then maybe we can quit hearing this BS like Bush says "We are not in a Holy War...." vs him saying "God told me to go to Iraq" *Sigh* The one's who that obsessed with religion are actually a very small group compared to those not obsessed... the problem is, those who are obsessed have their own tv networks and scream as loud as they can that this is a Christian Nation. It's not... they're just big mouths trying to get what they want out of the gov't that states it can't place one religion over another. They can't call this a Christian Nation when we have laws that prohibit placing one religion over another. So I would have to say that the majority aren't obsessed with religion.... they just don't know their own history and don't really care so long as they have the advantage. In other words, the majority are pretty stupid about their own country. (That should get me a bunch of hate mail) Hate mail or not.... it's true.

Not yet. Maybe there is balance in the universe and, as the surface grows hotter, because of all this going forth and conquering, hell is getting colder. There might be a freezing in hell when the surface is blazing.
By that time an atheist could get elected president.

I would guess you could run for election but as most people are saying it is doubtful if you would get far.

But, having said that Isn't there a Muslim guy doing really well at the moment?

I would have thought that would have been more difficult for America to accept given recent history than simply someone who is athiest.

Yes, American's are obsessed with religion.
The atheists want to force their beliefs on everyone through government, and so do the Christians.
And not a one of them has an understanding of the Constitution.
There is no "wall of separation". There is no freedom "from" religion. There is supposed to be freedom "of" religion and freedom from government taking away the rights of the individual.
Not a one of them gets this.

Sadly I believe it is true that Atheists are unable to become American politicans, which seems a very odd concept. (especially to use Brits).

The Americans don't seem to mind having politicians and presidents who are thick as two short planks, start illegal wars, can't even string sentences together, but he mustn't be Atheist. The mind boggles.

Saying that, this is the country that often frowns on people smoking, but its ok to wave a gun around. Madness!

Yes, why not. We have a Muslim representative sworn in on a Quaran, why not an Atheist.

I'm sure some are.

Isn't the QUEEN or KING of ENGLAND supposed to be a member of the CHURCH OF ENGLAND or has that changed by law.

Can the ruling Queen or King be an ATHEIST or CATHOLIC?

Are you TRUE secularists or just phony ones!

Even here in Oz we think USians have an unnatural obsession with religion.

We are rather grateful to them though.
USians were asked if they wanted Religion or The Convicts and they picked Religion.
Thank 'god' for that.

I really don't know about that. Most high level politicians in the US are at least nominally (in name), Protestant Christians. I serious doubt ALL of them really are, or even half. But I shouldn't say for sure.

I don't know how far an Atheist would make it in politics. It just seems so far out of the norm to most people.

Yes it is possible, but you'd have a hard time of it.

Unlike a parlimentary system where they vote for the party, in the US we vote for the person, makes it much harder when individuals have to defend their lack of beliefs then when they can just be the 15th person on the labor list or what have you.
