To me, (and I think this is what it means to most pagans) it is symbolic of the elements - earth, air, fire, water and spirit. Each is represented by the points on the star. The circle is symbolic of everything being connected.

The traditional four elements of earth, air, water, fire, and the fifth point, the top one, is spirit. So set upright, with a single point up and two points down, like on the flag of the US, it is a powerful protection.
It has been asked, "Why don't the pentagrams on the flag protect the US?" Answer: How do you know they don't? Maybe we would have had a lot worse time, or not even survived as a nation, if we had not had them. (Did they fail to work on 9/11/01, or did they help by giving the people in Flight 93 the courage to resist the hijackers?)
When you put it reversed, with two points up and one down, it resembles a goat's head (top are the horns, bottom is the goatee), and some people consider that Satanic. Others just say it is "Dark Side," or perhaps masculine where the other is feminine.
Choose your own interpretation.

Eclectic Solitary here as well... so we probably have about the same idea. Depending on which way it is presented... point up it shows the Spiritual over Material. Each point that is not pointing up is an element - Earth, Air, Fire, Water and the point up being Spirit. Of course, each element has it's own meaning as well... and it would take me forever to type all that stuff out. lol

Speaking as a mathematician, the "pentalpha" as the Greeks called it is a beautiful geometric symbol that contains no less than 29 golden triangles. It's a great example of the golden ratio, which has a lot of incredible properties.
Speaking as a Satanist, I wear it one point down to symbolize the "spirit" (bottom point) grounded in material and earthly existence (represented by the four other points for the "four elements"). It's a philosophical statement of "flesh over spirit", since my religion is about all the carnal. Of course, I've known Pagans who wore theirs point-down at times for completely different reasons (Pan, masucline energy, initiation rites, etc.) Like almost any symbol, conext is everything.

I am Hellenic Pagan, and to me it has a combination of meanings.
It incorporates the Elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Aether (Spirit/Energy).
It also is symbolic of the life of Man: Birth, Childhood, Adulthood, Old Age and (finally) Death with either Rebirth or Afterlife (Hellenic thinking actually incorporates both)
I wear it in the form of a pentacle necklace with the Ouroboros serpent (a symbol of Eternity) as the circle surrounding the star

To me personally, a pentagram is a 5-pointed, 5-sided geometrical figure in which each side intersects or is tangent to every other side.
However, I am aware that it has some spiritual significance to others. While I do not attach that same significance to it, I respect the beliefs of those who do.

Many people mistake this as a meaning for the devil, but it actually has many different meanings. In fact it was never even meant to be regarded as the sign of the devil. I actually was raised to believe that this was the sign of the devil but now that I'm older I've come to realize that this concept is completely not so. I'm still a believer in Christ, but I'm much more informed now than I once was.

I'm not Wicca, but to me it is a symbol of peace. I followed the Wicca path for a while and every time I saw the pentagram, I felt a peaceful calm.

Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Spirit. Spirit being above all elements and all Earthly things. The circle symbolises that all things are connected.

I think it's a Pagan or Wicca symbol, dependiing whether it is mounted with one or two points up.
