OR is an atheist someone who doesn't believe in at least one god? For example, if a person doesn't believe in Tāwhirimātea, the Māori god of weather (thunder, lightening, clouds, storms, wind, etc), is that person an "atheist" towards Tāwhirimātea?

Of course, an "atheist" is one who does not believe in any god, Christian or otherwise. But, because Christians assume that their god is the only one, maybe we should prefix the word with, say, "xi" for xian, so that it would be "xiatheist". That way, they would know EXACTLY which god we don't believe in. For everyone else, it would simply be "atheist".

We could apply the word "atheist" to the xians as well as they don't believe in any of the other thousands of viable gods available to them. But, sadly, I wouldn't know what prefix to use. :(

But then everyone in the world will be an atheist, because no one believes in all gods. I personally don't believe in any gods that are associated with religion. As for Tawhiritmatea or whatever it is, I had never heard of him before, but now that I have, I decide that he doesn't exist, because the idea of there being gods of clouds, suns, and storms is just too ancient and ridiculous. On the other hand, there might have been some people in history which were very powerful in physical, intellectual, or spiritual ways, that have been called "Gods" by some mindless idiots. For example, I wouldn't call Jesus "God", but certainly I believe that he existed. I also believe that the continent of Atlantis might have existed, and there might have been really advanced civilizations. But it's not like I'm worshiping them and am creating a philosophy out of what they did, or think they're gonna come back and fix the world or shi't like that. For some "gods" I don't really care if they exist or not, for example it might have been really cool if the Greek Gods really existed.

I don't agree with the term 'atheist' being directed towards a particular God. An atheist is someone with no belief in the existence of ANY God. If one doesn't believe in Tāwhirimātea but does believe in Quetzalcoatl, they are not an atheist, not even an atheist towards Tāwhirimātea.

An atheist is someone who believes in no god or gods. The word atheist itself means to be without a belief in god.

I go for the atheist being one who doesn't believe in the existence of any god that we've defined so far. After all, we can't define a theist as an atheist.

Atheists do not believe in any gods. Most also highly doubt the existence of anything supernatural or paranormal.

God is what lives in our inner psyche, that impacts our awareness and psychological wellness by way of transference to an imaginary greater authority. we are God. this is like asking, do you have self belief in your self? some people do have self belief in themselves, some do no longer. for people who don't, there are some effects, yet no longer those ridiculous lame imaginations of eternal fireplace and brimstone formulated to frighten and brainwash sons and daughters and to maintain the tithes coming in.

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in any god. It doesn't matter if it's Yahweh, Quetzalcoatl, Thor, Zeus, Osiris, etc.
