DUBLIN, Calif. — Audra Schmierer's Social Security number really gets around. It has been used by at least 81 people in 17 states, most of them probably illegal immigrants trying to get work.

Audra Schmierer eyes a map as she talks about sites where people used her ID number to get work. The federal government took years to discover the number was being used illegally, but authorities took little action even then.
"They knew what was happening but wouldn't do anything," said Schmierer, 33, a housewife in this affluent San Francisco suburb. "One name, one number, why can't they just match it up?"

I don't how how much Social Security numbers have been abused in recent years. The original purpose for for people who had jobs to pay into a fund so they could supplement their incomes when they retired. Not everybody had to have these numbers. Children and stay-at-home mothers often didn't have them. I can recall a time when people could post those numbers openly and didn't have to worry about having their identities stolen. Many carried Social Security cards in their wallets. I remember that my college professors actually posted their students' grades on the doors of their classrooms by their Social Security numbers. I think it is sickening that these numbers now get used for everything and people can actually have their lives ruined because somebody stole their identities.

It's not just your Social Security numbers that aren't safe anymore. Anything that is issued by a state or the US Government becomes public information. Some say that not so, but read what has been written. My story is about the US Groverment, my wife and I rented a post office box because we didn't want mail being left in post office box out in the country. There were only people like the bank, property tax board, CDF, a plant nursery that had the address, well now 3 years after my wife is getting mail from everywhere. Checked with the post master, he has no idea how this is happening.. The only thing safe is what only you and no one else knows about.

When a Social Security numbers was first issued it was never intended to be used as a form of identification. However since each person has a unique number it has. With a few exceptions you can refuse to have your Social Security numbers used as a form of ID. If more people realized this there would be far less ID fraud. Next time you are ask to supply your Social Security numbers you have to question how it will be used. I found more about Identity theft and the history of Social security card. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Security_number
