I am trying to learn to play golf, my husband enjoys it but i am horrible! Anyone have any tips to help me out? I have a full set of clubs, but i tend to stand up to straight when hitting the ball, could they be to short? I am 5'5 if that helps. When i can make contact i can hit fairly well but its the hitting it part i have trouble with, espically on the fairways. Any tips would be helpful, because i really want to learn to play. Thank you in advance!

I agree practice and lessons. If you can't affford lessons rent/buy a video. You can practice hitting soft foam balls from inside your house. You need to learn where your clubs bottom out and strikes the ground. Then you need to make that spot consistent. After you do those 2 things, making contact will no longer be a concern.

Good luck.

Yes, women’s clubs would make a huge difference. They’re much lighter and easier to swing. My wife is 5’2”, 100 lbs and uses kids clubs. I agree with the other posters: lessons are very important. You can’t watch videos or listen to tips on mechanics from Yahoo Answers.

Another tip is to convince one of your girlfriends to learn how to play and then only play with her. Even among guys, it is very hard for guys of different skill levels to play and learn together. You’ll also have more fun with your girlfriends and be able laugh things off without a husband looking over your shoulder.

On the golf course, I give my wife hugs and kisses. That’s about it. I help her set up and aim and then leave her alone. All I’ve ever taught her was to swing the club around her body like a hoola hoop and just swing through the ball.

There are lots of women’s group lessons where the lessons are cheaper and you start with lots of women at your skill level.

Finally, try to get out onto the course as much as possible. The driving range does not substitute for golf course fairways. Fairways always have different slopes and inclines that make real golf much more tricky. My wife doesn’t even go to the range anymore. We have a par three course near us and the ranger lets her on when the course is closing down. He lets us drop a few balls and practice. My wife doesn’t make divots so she’s not really hurting the course.

Hope this helps!

If you have a hard time making consistent contact there are two things I can think of that will probably help right away. First, if you don't already, make sure you keep hour head somewhere over the ball during and through the actual impact. As long as you are not playing alone there will always be someone else to help you spot your shot after hitting it, if you should lose sight of it. Second, and maybe more importantly, make one smooth practice swing before addressing the ball then step up and try to keep the same smooth feeling for your actual shot. The club head is doing the work here, not your biceps. Hope this helps!

Typically they say women 5'7" and taller should use men's clubs. You may do better with a women's set. I would go with taking lessons. If you don't want to pay for them which is understandable I would read Tiger Woods' book, "How I play golf" or subscribe to a golf publication( Golf Magazine, Golf Digest). They are full of tips from teaching professionals and professional players. I have never had a lesson and I am fairly decent player. I have Tiger's book and have a subscription to Golf Magazine. The part of your game to practice the most is chipping and putting. Saves me all the time. Be patient because professionals have teachers.

I am a beginner also, so I can't give you much advise. I found out last week, I hit better on the fairway with my irons if I am in the taller grass. You might try that. Do you know if you clubs are for petite? I was told I could use light weight men's clubs since I am 5'6", but I bought women's clubs.

I also get a lot of tips from this site: http://www.golflink.com/
You can save the videos you want and watch them as many times as you want.

I am loving the game and I hope you will also.

Oh yes for sure get some ladies clubs lighter is better for you.
Practice with your driver the most it's the lightest club in your bag groove your swing. Most women over swing due to their flexibility try staying stable in your legs make a good weight transfer and don't swing very long until you feel you can do so good luck.

Probably the reason you have trouble in the fairway, as opposed to the tee, is that you are not swinging "down" on the ball, to trap it into the turf and give it backspin. With your irons, you have to hit it down to get it up.
If you tend to stand up straight, that's a problem. See a pro and get a few lessons.

check around your area for beginners lessons. Lessons are a good start before you get into bad swing habits. Be patience and have fun. Golf takes some time and lots of practice to learn.
