Going to church is like showing up for dinner. You eat or not, depends on you.
Personally, I think eating is a good thing.

No, just attending does not make anyone a better Christian or closer to God.

Church offers fellowship and hearing the Word.
So that in itself can make someone a better Christian.
As far as being closer to God, there are times, when I talk to Him in my truck that He is way closer than I have ever felt Him in church. Its all how you come to Him, how you open up to Him and how you rejoice in Him.

The gathering together of believers is encouraged in the Bible. I feel it serves three purposes: instruction, worship and fellowship. I don't know if I'd say better, but it is definitely easier to worship in the company of other believers. And I do feel closer to God when I'm in His house.
These are, of course, personal opinions. I don't think any less of a fellow Christian if they don't attend services.

The Christian life is like a three-legged stool. All three legs must be there and be pretty equal or you are headed for a fall.
The three legs are:
Prayer
bible study
Fellowship with other believers
so going to church is very important - but it does not take the place of private times of prayer and bible reading.
In the bible, one's faith is always expressed in relationship with others - although a personal private walk with Jesus is necessary, in a real way it never stays personal and private.
god bless

I think going to church shows an amount of respect to the Father, it doesn't make them a better Christian, that involves acts of faith, like helping those in need.

I believe that a Christian is a member of the Body of Christ..and the only way for a Christian to grow as a member of that Body is to "exercise"...i.e., partake of the Sacrament of Holy Communion (Jesus: "Unless you eat of my flesh and drink of my blood, you have no life in you"). Since that cannot be done on your own and "in your heart" - then I think you can see the answer.

There are no good christians. No one is good, "All sin and fall short of the glory of God."
We go to church for fellowship and to increase our faith, "Faith comes by hearing the word of God.

going to church is nothing more then a social status.
doesnt mean your closer to god, your more christian than another, or that your faith is more concrete.

I can only answer for myself. The church I presently go to changed my life. Why? Because they are one of the best bible teaching churches around. When I began bible study in earnest, that is when everything changed.
The creed of our church is knowing Christ and making Him known. I love them for it. Calvary Chapel does not compromise the word of God.
