I have a toddler daughter and am pregnant with a little boy. My sister has 4 children, the eldest is 21 and the youngest is 9. My brother has 3 daughters, all of them under 8 years. Naturally it MAY be too early to see any definitive signs as yet.
I often worry that the disease may re-occur at some point with one of our children, as i heard that its occurence is genetic.
(I and my siblings seem to have escaped thank God!)

Average risk is 1%.
Your risk (and that of your siblings), as a children of a schizophrenic parent, is 10%.
Risk to grandchildren of a schizophrenic patient is 2.5-3%.
Although it can present at any point, schizophrenia most commonly manifests in the late teens/early adulthood. You may want to mention this to your sister (as her eldest son is about at the right age for developing this illness).

Most likely you or any other member of your family wont get it. Most people who are schizophrenics never had a relative with the disorder. Although there are some studies that suggest there is a genetic component to the disorder, they are inconclusive because of others studies that say different things about inheriting schizophrenia. You should be ok, along with everyone else in your family.

Schizophrenia is best viewed as a complex trait resulting from both genetic and environmental etiological influences. The extent of the genetic component, if any, in schizophrenia still remains unresolved.

The so called disease is not genetic. It can't be passed down to another person. What happens in your brain can't be transmitted to another person. I was told I have the so called disease but it's bull. Nobody in my family has it so there is your proof that it doesn't get passed on from one person to another. Why was your mom told that she has that? I was told I have it because I see dead people like a million other people in the country. I do not have such thing. I don't hear voices nor talk to myself. I am definitely not insane. You are gonna be fine and so will your kids. Don't worry about it. Take care!

Try this link to the Mind website:
Understanding schizophrenia
http://www.mind.org.uk/Information/Booklets/Understanding/Understanding+schizophrenia.htm
it should help to put your mind at rest.
I work in mental health, and can't say that anyone I know with schizophrenia has a parent who also suffers and believes it was passed on to them.
Hope this helps.

It would be more likely than in a family that doesn't have it.
Things are looking good in your family so far, though.
Don't be worrying.
One day at a time!
