In south korea, all males must do 2 years of military service (of course those with money or political influence find a way out of it). My question is: Do you think the same should be applied to the United States? Why or why not? Also, if you think it should, should it be applied to females as well? Again, why or why not?

*By the way, my personal opinion is YES. It would teach alot of these immature "boys" and "girls" (like the paris's and the lindsay's) responsibility and discipline, not to mention we need all the help we can get. All these deployments are wearing us out!!!

*Proud_to_be..... don't answer this question, I don't want to hear it, and I don't think anyone else does either.

Proud_to_be.......you know, I could've sworn that everyone that came in the military had never been in the military before, and therefore had no experience in it. SHOCKER!!!! As far as life experience, apparently you didn't read the answers you received from the question you asked earlier, and I'm not going to repeat them. I'm here to read the INTELLIGENT responses, not the ignorant, uneducated ones. I'm not here for a stupid pi**in contest either.

Ron Paul, I respect your answer, however I made no mention of fighting in Iraq. It was a question about military service in general, peace time or not.

More and more soldiers are getting deployed fresh out of AIT, that is with less than 6 months in the military. Most of the time, because of their lack of experience, they are easier to train because they haven't picked up any bad habits, and they aren't using "this is what we did last time i was here", therefore being better at a job than those that have been in a while or have been before, because ttp's continue to change on a daily basis......those that have been in the military know what im talking about

I feel that it's a great idea for all capable males and females.

The military gave me a chance to mature and grow. And appreciate the better things in life (such as life).

I also feel, to run for president of the U.S. you should have served a minimal of three years.

Yes, Army Service is mandatory for all males from 18 to 50 years of age. They have to do a 2 and a half year full-time national service and then would be called for around 40 days every year till they reach 50. Hope this info helped.

I think there should be some type of service. Not necessarily military service, but give people a choice. Military, peace corps, job corps could be some choices. Also some professions such as nurses or teachers that we have a national shortage in. Police, firefighters and emergency response services could count as well.

The amount of time you serve and benifits from it should depend on the service. For example, say there is an over fill in Job Corps and a shortage in the military, then the government can mandate that it takes 4 years of service in Job Corps vs 2 years in the Military. Additional benifits could be added if a service area is short as well, such a college benifits.

This way, the military is still volunteer, but everyone still has to do some type of national service.

Yes, I also think a mandatory service (for males) would be beneficial. It'd teach some discipline to the youth, get them to be a part of a team and get them off their X-box playing spoiled butts. Not everyone goes to college so I don't see why that's brought up as an excuse. They can learn a trade and get a better job when they're discharged as well. This way the same people won't be sent over to some sandpit every other year while the same ones keep staying. It would be nice if we had extra bodies here for own domestic issues as well. I don't think it infringes on our rights as Americans either; serving your country is an honor and in essence gives you more rights and benefits.
Of course, this will never happen but we'd see a refreshing new country if the youth of today stood for something other than themselves.

The great thing about a democracy is that no one tells you what to do . While I do believe in the need in this country for some sort of public service for all people I don't believe that everybody should do it in the military. The Military is not for all people my sisters would not like the rigidity of the military life but they would do well in a Peace Corp or something like it. Enforced Military Service, The Draft, should be only for the extreme emergencies of this world and it should be for both men and women.

You know even if the US started to draft young men and women today it would be almost a year before any of them were ready to deploy. So all I see for the future is a worn out military. God Bless the young men and women in Afghanistan and Iraq. I hope that each will be able to be welcomed back into the bosoms of their families soon.

God, Allah and Yahweh protect the United States of America.

I dont think it should be mandatory....especially for women.

There are some women built for military, but speaking for myself only...I would die a thousand deaths if I had to do it. I am in no way shape or form mentally, physically or emotionally strong wnough to handle being in the miltiary. Im just strong enough to be married to one =)

For males, well, we just do not have the resources for it.

All citizens should have compulsory service of some sort (military or other public service). Both males and females. Just like almost every other modern democracy in the world. Another good example would be Germany. The lack of this type of thing is what breeds so many un-patriotic turds in this country. Give nothing, feel nothing...

Voluntary service is by far the best.

When I was in, everybody who was wearing was there because they chose to be. They have a pride in their country, cherish the nation's values and have chosen to defend their nation with their lives. It is that attitude, combined with outstanding training is what makes the United States Armed Forces the premium fighting force across the world.

I have no wish to serve with anybody who is serving compulsory service and has no intention whatsoever of following the orders needed to defend this nation and its interests abroad. That person will get me killed.

God bless the men and women of the all volunteer Armed Forces and God bless the USA!

We have the technology to go directly after the enemy's leaders / decision makers and avoid killing or injuring people who had nothing to do with their decisions. The money it would take to double the number of troops should be spent on improving this technology. The question of drafting would be moot.

Mandatory service is also required for men through most of Europe, in Israel men and women are required to serve.

It would definitely be a great wakeup to today's generation!
