What could cause such a big difference?

That's completely normal. If they had to fight with a tooth more on one side than the other (like if they had to cut into your jaw, or were just rougher on that side), then that side will be more bruised and hurt more. It'll go away. Til then, good luck.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU DO EVERYTHING THE DOCTOR TOLD YOU SO YOU DON'T LOSE THE BLOOD CLOT FROM THE EXTRACTION SITE AND GET DRY SOCKET.
