I'm thinking of joining the marines, Is there anything that I need to know? Anything that I'm probably not prepared for? Any marines out there that want to shed some light on the situation would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hello,
I think it is great that you are thinking about going into the marines.I spent 4yrs in and to me, it was the best choice I've ever made, and the only reason i got out is because I tore both of my knees up and messed up my back. So have you decided on a job or(MOS) yet? If not pick a job that will benefit you when you get out.Unlike me I chose to be an 0351 witch is an ant-tank assultman, and there is not alot of jobs out here that require you to know how to blow up a tank.
Well I guess I will let you go and if you have any questions feel free to write me.

Know this.......what you bring with you wont be needed. You will be given everything you will need. Keep your ears open and your eyes to the front at all times. First word out of you mouth is "SIR' and the last word out of your mouth is "SIR". Nothing prepares you for the onslaught of Marine Corps Basic Training. Speak when spoken to and enjoy the ride RECRUIT! This is where WE separate the men from the sailors!

As soon as your feet hit those yellow footprints on the reception deck, keep your brain ON, your ears OPEN, and your mouth SHUT, except to answer your Drill Instructors. THEY will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know, WHEN you need to KNOW it!
Do what your D.I.'s and other superiors tell you to, the best you can, as fast as you can, and you just MIGHT turn out to be a Marine (notice the CAPITAL 'M') your relatives can be proud of!

First talk to all the branches of the military,, sometimes what you think you want is really not best suited for you.
Take the AVSAB test , then decide what to do,, go with the branch you score highest on,, not the lowest,,
you score high for the Army then go army, if Navy go Navy,, etc,
Always Listen to your heart and gut,,,,

Well your definitely not prepared for being a Marine.
How could you be.
But you'll make it thru Boot, just like people have for 100's of years.
But there is no way to accurately tell a civilian, what it is like once your in the military.
You just don't have the background or experiences to relate yet.
But a positive altitude will get you where you need to be.
Just don't believe anything you see in the movies.

I feel the government will not properly train you, they will not properly protect you, they will not properly support you once you come home. They want and are desperate in need of fresh blood.
Are you willing to die for a lie? Are you willing to go on multiple deployments in a war zone? Are you willing to take the chance of becoming disabled or mentally ill and not get the care you need?
I would seriously do some self reflection and make sure its what you really want to do. There are a lot of problems with the military right now as far as training, and supplying the soldiers, and the VA has serious issues in helping soldiers get what they need once they are home.
I wish you luck and I hope you find the strength to find the truth and choose whats right for you.
Peace
