I know someone is going to ask for an example, but we have given them hundreds and they distort the truth everytime.

Evidently Lying is the new morality.... just ask senator Craig who claims he was "hasty" in accepting the guilty plea...

Or Mark Foley... who touted against gays in between sexy emails to Page boys...

Or Bob Allen, another conservative... who just this week offended a cop in Florida by offering a whole whopping $20 for gay sex....

Or Ted Haggert, a christian evangelist who only got a "massage" and some crystal meth from HIS male prostitute...

Every one of these guys has just LOVED to use the Bible against other people....

I'll give the perfect example. Gen. 1 & 2. Man cannot be created both before plants AND after plants. It is an impossibility. But that is what the text says. YET, a terrorist for jesus will come up with any number of ridiculous reasons to rationalize in there own minds a reason for that text to be innerrant. The answer to your question is they have to lie for many reasons: it is too risky to go against there cult; they can't deal with the bible having errors; their mommy and daddy told them it was that way; etc, etc.

Read Numbers 5:11-28 if you want an example of not just an injustice but probably one of the most ridiculous ones.

Vince out...

It's a matter of distortion. If the biblical literalist think that enough rationalization or adding a new context to the passage in the Bible will make it true, then they will do everything necessary. I heard a story about Oman "spilling his seed" and the fundamentalists used it as evidence that all masturbation was wrong. I have also heard death by stoning (for sexual behavior) justified by saying "it was a way for god to protect his chosen people from sexual diseases spread by infidelity." (!)

But the bible does not fit into a modern value system. Taken at face value, and not out of context, the bible preaches violence, infanticide, human slavery, and all sorts of crimes.

I really WISH someone would answer you on this. I wonder all the time I have asked numerous questions about errors in the Bible only to have people either just tell me I am going to hell, talk about something completely different than I am asking or tell me you have to have faith....none of which are valid answers!

It leaves me with the impression there are no answers and that means there is no God.

I think it's because people are taught that the bible is the direct writings of God.Many people don't realize that the bible was written by men who gave their visions of what they saw and thus wrote about it.There are many scriptures that have been left out of the book for reasons of many. The Quran is the only book that claims to be the direct words from God,given to the phrophet.PBBUH.

The answer from Dillon C is exactly what you are asking about. The simple fact is, we don't see what we don't want to see. If your thinking is confined by religion (and believe me, it is confined!) it is almost impossible to entertain anything that contradicts your accepted beliefs. I know, I was once a fervent believer until something set me off on a train of thought that brought me to where I am now. From outside, and ONLY from outside the confines of religion, can you see the absurdity of it all. I would say to believers of gods and divinities, look at the beliefs of other religions! See the absurdity of their beliefs, and then try to understand the fact that the believers in those other religions see exactly the same absurdity in YOUR beliefs!

Remember that the Bible is not only about the actions of God, but also the actions of sinful, fallible Man as well. Thus, you often see people in Scripture doing things contrary to the will of God. That does not mean that God is unjust.

I have read several of the things you would call errors or contradictions, but I have failed to find any that rise to the level of calling me to question my faith. Should you have a specific one in mind, I would love to hear it.

The bible was written by man...of course there are going to be errors! And there are contradictions in the bible because it was written by more than one person. It's simple to understand why there are errors....it's just that people make WAY too big of a deal out of it. People that read the bible incorrectly and try to take the meaning of it in the wrong way are the ones who get upset by the errors.

uh - is this another attempt at tearing down straw men???

The Bible tells honestly about the injustices that took place when people turned their back on God. Christians don't try to cover it up.

For instance, King David committed adultery with Bathsheba, then when he discovered that she was pregnant, had her husband killed.

Another example of injustice in the Bible is when a man allowed his wife to be raped, then left her outside all night till she died. THEN he cut her body into 12 parts to send to the 12 tribes of Israel to ask for their help in defeating the enemy who raped his wife! Of course, you need to remember that in the same book that tells of this incident, it also said that everybody did what was right in his own eyes. Nobody was seeking God, and nobody was actually serving God.

I could give you OTHER examples as well. But it just adds to the authenticity of the Bible, rather than glossing over the sins of the people, it shows them for what they are - rebellion against God's authority, going after false gods, and "doing what is right in their own eyes" rather than obeying God.

So, why do you say that believers lie? What kind of nonsense is that all about? Isn't that just a false accusation? yet another attempt at discrediting Christians by tearing down straw men?

Come on - ask an honest question for a change! THIS kind of question (truly a rebellious question to justify your sins) is getting rather old!

In fact, Jesus hit the nail on the head when He said that people refuse to turn to God because their deeds are evil and they don't want to be exposed!

Dillon C just gave you a fine example of what you are talking about. They all do it, it's like they literally and figuratively can't see the forests for the trees. They're automatons, if they don't do this, do they self destruct? They literally disregard the obvious in defense of their faith. It's a total distortion of the truth.
