It's a 1998 Mark 4. The handbrake cable is adjusted up and is fully tight on the 5th notch. But the car won't hold on a hill. The normal footbrake operation is fine. I removed the rear hubs and could find nothing wrong. There is plenty of lining left. Help!

You'll probably find its a fault with the adjusters on the rear shoes, their prone to sieze or wear (common on most fords)

The brake shoes will need to be removed to sort the problem, if your not mechanicly minded tho don't try and do it your self they can be very difficult to put back on

Release the handbrake cable adjuster until its quite loose.Start the car, and with the engine running press the footbrake as hard as you can a few times. This should activate the self adjusters for the rear brakes. If you listen carefully you will hear them clicking?otherwise you will need to operate the adjusters manually which is a job for a mechanic, hope this helps

You need to adjust the rear brake shoes before adjusting the handbrake cable....also check that the levers on the shoes are not seized

Are you headed forwards or backwards down that hill. If it will hold going forwards then nothing is wrong. A lot of handbrakes won't hold worth a hoot in reverse due to the way their designed.
